Laufey sets new standard for modern jazz

Share: A mixture of classical to contemporary, Laufey brings heartfelt authenticity to modern music. Laufey, an Icelandic-Chinese singer-songwriter and composer, strays away from the typical pop sound. Her music feels like a mixture of Chet Baker and a beautiful lullaby that is filled with comfort and love.  My first recommendation is “Magnolia”, a song that is an ode to a beautiful person who still finds insecurities about themselves and longs for another Magnolia cycle that plays with the concept of not being good enough for …

TV review: Nobody cares about how she met his father

Share: Hulu attempts a lighthearted comedy spinoff with “How I Met Your Father” and falls into an oblivion of laugh tracks and bad jokes. Hillary Duff leads the cast in the series as a single woman in New York named Sophie who is searching for love on her Tinder app, hardly an innovative spin on a stereotypical plot. Ultimately the show fails to bring anything new to our streaming screens and falls short in replicating the success of its predecessor “How I Met Your Mother”(2005). …

Talent can’t save Omar Apollo’s boring single

Share: Apollo enters on a guitar, with a soft strumming and emotional pattern sounding similar to song intros for bands like Weezer, Radiohead, or The Eagles, a feeling of distaste and repetition that every artist has already attempted before him. In today’s world of music, it’s best to get to the point, Apollo should have used the time to be different and exciting. His use of melodically familiar guitar riffs are an excellent tool for a song, but when done with little effort, it makes …

Column: Are the Rams beloved in Los Angeles?

Share: Congratulations Rams! The Los Angeles Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals this past Sunday in the Super Bowl. The organization won its second Super Bowl, 22 years and two cities apart. It’s truly impressive because the Dodgers won in 2020 and the Lakers won in 2020. There has been a lot of Los Angeles sports pride the past few years. Many fans expected the Rams to step up and win in 2020, but they had a lackluster season and were booted out of the playoffs …

Return to campus causes student backlash at universities

Share: Students at several UC campuses returned to in-person instruction on Monday, Jan. 31, which created some tension with some students. Although UC schools put into place mask mandates and testing standards to ensure student safety, students organized  protests and staged walkouts. Students made sure to voice their disagreement with their school’s decision to return to campus, claiming it is too early to be back in person. Sound Familiar?  Though walkouts were not organized, the return to PCC campus caused some tension amongst the students, …

Zendaya’s intense acting shows drugs are cool until they’re not

Share: Within the first three minutes of the episode Rue is confronted by her mom who claims she knows Rue has been taking pills. Rue’s entire world has been completely disrupted from the very opening scene. The gravity of the situation makes it apparent that the entire episode is going to be extremely emotional. Up until now, Rue had deceived her mom into believing her lies of sobriety all the while getting entangled with drug dealing. “Euphoria” fans have anticipated Rue’s downfall but were still …

Later, Larry: PCC says farewell to our forgotten mascot

Share: In case anyone was wondering, this is PCC’s current mascot.  Larry the Lancer.  For some colleges including UCLA, UC Santa Cruz, UC Irvine, etc., mascots are the backbone of the school’s identity. A way to bring a campus together in a unified identity. But something about Larry’s yellow eyes and smug face is slightly terrifying which is probably why PCC never brings him out for advertising or games. Luckily for PCC, there are plans right around the corner to introduce a new mascot to …

Viewers grow attached to humanized androids in ‘Raised by Wolves’

Share: Aaron Guzikowski’s “Raised by Wolves” places the human experience into a new world with adaptive androids that in most cases are more redeemable than the humans they serve. The show follows a family composed of a male and female android that are raising a pod of human children, in which the female android had grown from embryos. Guzikowski’s artistic choice on the droid’s sophisticated technology enables them to mimic the traits of humans to an uncanny degree, which often leaves the audience to question …
