Even deranged racists like Joe Rogan deserve free speech
Share: Spotify paid Rogan a reported $100 million for an exclusive licensing deal in 2020 and has backed his stance on the guests allowed on his show and topics discussed, mostly. Employees and listeners have to ask themselves if their moral compass will enable them to support a company that would do so. For the most part, the podcast is entertaining for Rogan’s broad audience, who have followed his career from stand-up comedian, the host for the tv show ‘Fear Factor” and UFC announcer. With …
A moment of reflection: Looking back at the Mirror Pool’s leaky problem
Share: After decades of maintenance, the Mirror Pools still present headaches for the PCC administration after years of leaking water, a dilapidated water filtration system, and stubborn carob trees that rest alongside the pool’s edge. In the early ‘30s, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake off the coast of Long Beach caused structural damage to what was then known as Pasadena Junior College. Over the next few years, the institution went through a dramatic reconstruction phase to rebuild the damaged structures to provide an adequate learning space …
Column: PCC men’s basketball lucky to be 1-19
Share: The PCC men’s basketball team is bad. And when I say bad, I mean awful. Horrible, substandard, inferior, unacceptable, or abhorrent. It doesn’t matter what synonym you choose, they all apply. It’s gotten so ugly that the bus driver should start charging the student-athletes for rides. I hate to criticize so harshly, but they are the second-worst basketball team in the entire state. And there are 100 teams from as far north as Mendocino College all the way down south towards the three San …
Women’s basketball barely defeat limping Beavers
Share: The Lancers lead had dropped a very comfortable lead in the fourth quarter from 20 points to an enigmatic 10 points with a little less than four minutes left. Head coach Joe Peron instructed his point guard Maiya Villanueva, who wasn’t having her greatest shooting performance, to slow it down. On average, Villanueva scores 14 points and shoots 30% from the field. Tonight she had 9 points and shot 14%, with three of those points coming from free throws. It felt as if the …
Fans waited two years to finally watch the softball team lose
Share: The women’s softball team and crowd’s spirit seemed optimistic at the commencement of the first of two games played in front of an audience since March 3, 2020. Approximately 25 of PCC’s fans packed into the tiny silver bleachers on the team’s side. The Lancers lost both legs against the Palomar City College Comets at Robinson Park Saturday, January 29, 2022. Palomar beat the PCC, 9-1 and 15-5. The result did not discourage head coach Monica Tantlinger from believing in the Lancers in her …
Return to campus complicated by long testing lines
Share: A car broke down this weekend in the Covid-19 testing car line and required a tow-truck service to remove the vehicle. This first week back to school was a classic case of trial and error. As of Jan. 24, Pasadena City College now requires all students and staff to receive a negative Covid-19 test taken within 72 hours prior to coming to class or entering the buildings. PCC has over 26,000 students currently enrolled this spring semester, many of whom are taking in-person classes. …
‘DAWN FM’: The rise of the Weeknd’s mature sound
Share: 2021 marked a decade of Abel Tesfaye, known more by his stage name The Weeknd, telling the world of his tumultuous lifestyle. Over the span of three mixtapes and four albums, he has successfully branded himself the master of recounting the late night escapades that lead to morning regret. The true king of passing off heartache as jadeness. In 2022, however, Tesfaye returns with an album that breaks free from this self made mold. Dawn FM, a 16-track album that plays like a radio …
Life hacks: A student’s guide to in-person learning
Share: Students resumed in-person sessions on Monday, Jan. 24, at Pasadena City College, and for many students dealing with the anxieties of day one in the middle of a pandemic can lead to several questions, but who should they ask? Parking PCC has several student parking lots that, at the moment, are free of charge temporarily, not forever. Students would not know this since the parking lot daily permit machines are still accepting money, and the PCC website gives instructions on how to pay for …
