What does a basketball player look like? Like this.

Share: Coming out of her hotel room, dressed in red and gray basketball shorts and a matching mesh top with STARS logo written across the front, an older couple approached the future PCC women’s basketball player. Guadalupe Vazquez Herrera went to a Chicago amateur basketball tournament prior to her senior year, hoping to make an impression on some of the coaches and scouts. The last thing she thought she’d confront is a moment of keenness and introspection. The interaction was brief and awkward, but it …

Board of Trustees voted to approve new men’s head basketball coach

Share: PCC Board of Trustees unanimously voted to approve Ryan Frazer as the new head basketball coach Wednesday, March 16 in the Crevling Lounge. “I picked PCC because of the opportunity I saw there,” Frazer said. “The location is ideal in terms of recruitment and students being able to drive to campus. I know the history of the program and know it is one of very few schools to be a multiple time state champion. The challenge of starting over doesn’t really scare me, it …

Rio Hondo’s deep roster overwhelms Lancers

Share: Freshman guard Naomi Turner waited for her teammate, Lupe Vazquez, to come off of a down screen near the 3-point baseline. As Vazquez lethargically trotted from one side of the court to the other side, Turner decided to make something happen before the shot clock expired. On her initial step, Turner fell to the floor and the ball bounced to the other side of the court. The well-rested Rio Hondo players made the uncontested fast-break sequence look like the George Mikan drill. It was …

Column: Are the Rams beloved in Los Angeles?

Share: Congratulations Rams! The Los Angeles Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals this past Sunday in the Super Bowl. The organization won its second Super Bowl, 22 years and two cities apart. It’s truly impressive because the Dodgers won in 2020 and the Lakers won in 2020. There has been a lot of Los Angeles sports pride the past few years. Many fans expected the Rams to step up and win in 2020, but they had a lackluster season and were booted out of the playoffs …

Column: PCC men’s basketball lucky to be 1-19

Share: The PCC men’s basketball team is bad. And when I say bad, I mean awful. Horrible, substandard, inferior, unacceptable, or abhorrent. It doesn’t matter what synonym you choose, they all apply. It’s gotten so ugly that the bus driver should start charging the student-athletes for rides. I hate to criticize so harshly, but they are the second-worst basketball team in the entire state. And there are 100 teams from as far north as Mendocino College all the way down south towards the three San …

Women’s basketball barely defeat limping Beavers

Share: The Lancers lead had dropped a very comfortable lead in the fourth quarter from 20 points to an enigmatic 10 points with a little less than four minutes left. Head coach Joe Peron instructed his point guard Maiya Villanueva, who wasn’t having her greatest shooting performance, to slow it down. On average, Villanueva scores 14 points and shoots 30% from the field. Tonight she had 9 points and shot 14%, with three of those points coming from free throws.  It felt as if the …

California Homeowners: ‘Not In My Backyard’

Share: In 1978, California passed proposition 13. The amendment was supposed to stabilize the property taxes by ensuring homeowners that their taxes wouldn’t increase by more than 1% each year and keep Californians in their homes over rising property values, but the tax code decreased the amount of revenue that the local government collected. These new tax codes are exactly why California isn’t as liberal as one would think.  Follow:

Lancers exact revenge, keep bowl dreams alive

Share: Quarterback Kade Wentz faked the handoff to Miles Anderson, took three steps back, and threw a deep rainbow to Wheeler Smith. With nobody in front of him, Smith pranced from one hash to the other avoiding the last two Grossmont Griffin defenders for the touchdown. For the Lancers, it gave them the early lead, but for Wentz and Smith, it was a connection built since childhood. Follow:

PCC football wins share of conference title for first time since 2001

Share: A tired but resilient Lancers defense had remained on the field for a little over seven minutes. On the other side of the ball, Mt. San Jacinto Eagles were hopeful that they could score the equalizer, down 21-14 in the third quarter. The Lancers faced another fourth down after an offsides penalty ruined a great fourth down stop by Lucio Rodriguez and the rest of the defense.  Follow:
