How culture pushes and empowers AAPI students

Share: As May comes to an end, we reflect on a month of celebration and recognition of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage. At PCC, this month offers an opportunity for students to reflect on and appreciate the diverse array of cultural elements that make up AAPI heritage from enticing cuisine to the nature and family dynamics of our classmates.  When the AAPI members of the student body were asked what their favorite part of their own culture was, cuisine was the quickest answer that …

A loving family doesn’t have to start with marriage

Share: As the story goes, women can’t do anything without getting shamed and criticized. Each day consists of faulting women on something new that is either out of their control or not of their preference. When a woman chooses to embark on a life unparalleled to the traditional way, it’s considered wrong and sinful in the eyes of what may feel like a stronger judgment.  Earlier this week, an Instagram mutual of mine made a post to her story that negatively targeted women who get …

With book banning on the rise, California risks following suit

Share: While Pasadena is pushing back on book censorship through participation in events like Banned Books Week, Huntington Beach, Fresno, and other cities across California are becoming the target of efforts to ban books in libraries and public schools. These cities are following a wider national trend in states like Florida, Texas and other predominantly conservative areas. “Book bans are incredibly effective,” said young adult author and national leader of Authors Against Book Bans (AABB) Maggie Tokuda-Hall. “They target places where books are most accessible—in …

Is WNBA momentum a movement or moment?

Share: The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) season has kicked off, and the spotlight is on the rising stars from the most-watched women’s NCAA basketball tournament in its history. Athletes like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, Cameron Brink, and numerous other talented women have earned their moment. But this is not just a moment. It’s a movement that needs the continuous support of the media, institutions, and fans to thrive beyond 2024.  There was hype going into this year’s WNBA season and whether the women of …

AI in the classroom? Policy is still up to professors at PCC

Share: Throughout 2023, educators saw an incoming boom of ChatGPT and other generative AI tools and discussed how to prepare for its impact on their classrooms. Now, as we reach the end of the first full school year since AI came on the scene, PCC instructors have had to adjust their preparations in real-time. “It’s bad out there,” said Dr. Liesel Reinhart, who teaches Visual Arts & Media Studies at PCC. “We are getting a tremendous number of assignments turned in that use various types …

Idiot kicker’s stupid speech echoes the NFL’s history with toxic masculinity

Share: Harrison Butker is quite possibly the nation’s biggest idiot.  No sane human being would stand in front of a room of college educated people and deliver a speech like that. Any sort of platformed human with a brain would be able to predict the national shitstorm that they’d face when beginning their commencement speech speaking of “bad leaders who don’t stay in their lane.” It’s been all over the news. All of his mentions about how women should be exclusively focused on becoming “homemakers”, …

‘Furiosa’: A slow burn that sparks a glorious odyssey

Share: Amidst a sea of unnecessary sequels and remakes that are being overwhelmingly released this year, director and co-writer George Miller returns to the dunes of the Wasteland with “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” a prequel to the 2015 film, “Mad Max: Fury Road.” Despite the newest installation in the “Mad Max” franchise not hitting as hard as its predecessor, “Furiosa” is a brilliant exploration of the titular character while providing a larger scope of the world in this series and delivering jaw-dropping moments sprinkled …

This year’s Met Gala diverts your gaze from real issues with artificial glitz

Share: As our country, and seemingly the rest of the world, continues to dissolve into further chaos, it’s impossible to ignore the dystopian nature of events such as the Met Gala when protests against genocide can be seen only blocks away. The recent 2024 Met Gala dress code seems to have reached beyond the bounds of dystopian after the dress code was themed after a famous science fiction short story by J.G. Ballard titled “The Garden of Time,” hinting at potentially deeper societal issues bubbling …

Movie studios are making the market bleed with sequel greed

Share: Last year, audiences were gifted with original stories like “Anatomy of a Fall” and “Past Lives,” along with unique stories that were never before adapted, such as “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things.” This year’s set of releases looks bleak, with most of them being cash-grab sequels or reboots, and at this rate, many even being both. Hollywood executives should be considering beforehand what makes a sequel worth having and that sequels are best done with a purpose.  The list of 2024 movie releases is a …
