Racist graffiti found in men’s locker room

Share: Vandalism that included racist messages was found inside the men’s locker room in the GM building on campus on Tuesday morning by faculty who teach in the building prior to classes starting. The language of the vandalism was disparaging towards Black people and homeless people but was “non-threatening,” according to PCC Spokesperson Alex Boekelheide. The locker room stayed open during cleaning and the vandalism was removed within an hour. Because of the content, campus security is investigating the vandalism as a crime. A statement …

Missed Club Rush? Here’s where to find your people

Share: There’s a good reason the quad was so crowded last week. Club Rush and University Day were both present out there. Club Rush (dubbed “Clubchella” this year) is when PCC students get to express their passion and enthusiasm for their club activities where the entire campus can see them. It’s a reminder that learning doesn’t have to be done in a classroom. College clubs are a way to get direct, practical experience without the pressure of a grade. There’s no need to wait until …

Love triangles aren’t tired, they just aren’t in the best shape

Share: Love triangles have been one of fiction’s most common tropes for years now. From the likes of “Twilight” to the new generation’s “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” many writers default on this trope to engage their audiences and the trope isn’t tired, it’s just often done poorly.  Take Jenny Han’s hit series “The Summer I Turned Pretty” (TSITP) for instance. The series follows its main character Isabel “Belly” Conklin and her romances with the Fisher brothers: Conrad, her first love, and Jeremiah, her childhood …

‘Marvel Vs Capcom’ retro bundle brings out the kid in all of us

Share: The days of slotting coins down an arcade machine are long gone. The historic fighting games of the “Marvel Vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics” have officially reached a new generation of gaming platforms.  Of the six games that are being released as their original arcade selves, one stands out amidst the crowd of classics. “The Punisher” is the only non-fighting game in the bundle of games. While its brutal side-scrolling beat ’em up style is enjoyable for the first couple of minutes, the …

Your favorite show doesn’t need the reboot. Hollywood does

Share: It’s no surprise anymore to see a show you grew up watching or a show you love get handed off to the depths of reboot hell. Today, the industry is rapidly pumping out new content to keep up with our rapid culture and the studios are running out of original ideas. Reboots, remakes, and spin-offs all reveal Hollywood’s lack of creativity. The industry has been chasing its own high by forcing its reboots into television and exploiting their own past and their viewers for …

Lancers keep their heads up despite latest loss

Share: Missed opportunities from PCC resulted in their defeat at the hands of San Diego Mesa by a score of 3-0 this past Wednesday, September, 11. In an action-filled game against the San Diego Mesa women’s volleyball team, the Lancers were able to show no fear against their winning streak. The PCC women’s volleyball team were getting ready for the game by warming up with loud music and chants. Spiking practices were looking good as the home crowd cheered for the girls showing their support.  …

California artists paint dire picture of a planet in crisis

Share: Six artists from California are gathered on stage in a dim theater room at Pasadena City College. At the podium, art director Jeffrey B. Cain and curator Lucinda Luvaas lead the discussion of the issues facing the planet highlighted in the Art. On the screen behind them is the exhibit title, “Reflections On Our Warming Planet: Part Three.”   “We wanted to showcase what art can do outside of the art dialogue, how it could work with particular issues, scientists, how it could work with …

From the Archive: Courier covers college’s conception

Share: [Editor’s Desk, 2024: As we celebrate PCC’s centennial by going through the Courier archives, we found the perfect story this week. The Courier was founded in 1915 as the Pasadena High School Chronicle, but PCC itself measures its start from the opening of the Junior College at the high school in 1924. That means we were able to find the story where we covered the opening of the college itself! Unfortunately, as you can see from the photo, the archived copy has suffered some …

Do we really need (Taylor’s Version) of politics?

Share: By now, Taylor Swift’s influence on the cultural zeitgeist is undeniable. From Grammy-winning albums to sold-out stadium tours, Swift has proven herself a powerhouse in the entertainment world. Recently, she made waves not with a song or a concert but with a political endorsement: Kamala Harris for president in 2024. This made news headlines across the country, with some claiming that this will have turned the tide of the election, and others claiming that it won’t matter at all. However, the fact that a …

Colleges struggle to CAPTCHA fake students scamming millions

Share: Hackers have been using artificial intelligence (AI) bots to pose as college students in online classes for years, in an attempt to scam colleges out of financial aid money. Schemes like these have been tracked as far back as even the early 2000s.  Kim Rich, a former deputy sheriff and professor of criminal justice at Los Angeles Pierce College, has been investigating these online bots since 2006. “If a given student received $3,000 in financial aid, and 40,000 bots have infiltrated a given district, …
