‘Tune out all the noise’: PCC students set study habits to music

Share: During an end-of-summer afternoon, the sun reflects off the shiny Center for the Arts building as PCC Freshman Alex Peña sits on the grass in front. While enjoying their lunch, they tell the story about their finicky process of finding peace through Rock and K-Pop music while studying for their Public Health Science degree. “Well, I have ADHD, so if I’m not listening to music, I’m listening to everything else,” says Peña. “So when I listen to music, it just helps me tune out …

Board of Trustees takes unprecedented interest in Black Family Reunion

Share: In last week’s Board of Trustees (BOT) meeting, PCC faculty reprimanded the BOT for requesting the project proposal of the Black Family Reunion, an event that is meant to recruit students of color, instead of reaching out directly to the event organizers. In July’s meeting, trustee Steve Gibson suggested removing an item from the consent calendar. A consent calendar is a list of items up for approval by the board so that the items can be approved all at once instead of one item …

PCC lags in response to historic drought

Share: During the ongoing extreme drought in the Western United States, Pasadena City College has taken little concrete action to mitigate the impact their lawns have on the current drought, insisting the school’s character is more important than adapting to a changing environment.  “When it comes specifically to the green spaces on campus, that’s a major part of what makes PCC who we are,” School Spokesperson Alex Boekelheide said.  Despite the one day a week watering restrictions and a growing movement for sustainable watering and …

PCC students rely on their devices for better or worse

Share: Laying in bed at 10 pm listening to the latest, greatest hits before drifting into slumber is a novel treat that many of us take for granted. In a day and age where humankind is afforded such luxuries at the tip of a finger, one can almost forget that it was not so long ago when such instant gratification was nearly nonexistent. During the course of the last 20 years or perhaps more exclusively the last decade, an entire new platform of electronics has …

The survival of Poo-Bah, Pasadena’s last great record store

Share: Independent record stores are a dying breed. In the age of algorithms, music communities have migrated online. Streaming services like Apple Music and Spotify have replaced ritual crate digging at local shops. Even as music consumption continues to grow, physical album sales account for a shrinking portion of music revenue, causing more and more shops across the country to fold. The only way for stores to survive is to adapt. Poo-Bah Record Shop, currently in its third home, is living proof here in Pasadena. …
