Missed opportunities from PCC resulted in their defeat at the hands of San Diego Mesa by a score of 3-0 this past Wednesday, September, 11.
In an action-filled game against the San Diego Mesa women’s volleyball team, the Lancers were able to show no fear against their winning streak. The PCC women’s volleyball team were getting ready for the game by warming up with loud music and chants. Spiking practices were looking good as the home crowd cheered for the girls showing their support.
The game began with a remembrance ceremony for 9/11 where both teams pledged their allegiance to the flag during the national anthem.
San Diego Mesa scored the first series point of the game after the Lancers let the lead slip away up 21-18.
“We missed a serve, and that opened the door,” head coach Mike Terrill said. “Then their best player got to the front row and she ended it for them.”
He also gave credit to having the right mindset in order to keep on competing. Sets 2 and 3 were unfortunately not the same and Sand Diego Mesa had the lead in both.
PCC never lost their momentum as they couldn’t get ahead of San Diego Mesa, but had the drive to play hard. A spike from the Lancers flew into #2 on the San Diego Mesa team and knocked her off her feet. It was apparent that practice paid off for the Lancers. Although PCC kept receiving red flags, the referee ultimately decided most of them were good which resulted in minimum fouls.
There were a lot of tumbles taken by PCC while playing their best against an undefeated team. The girls showed off how strong they were by getting up and brushing it off each time after sliding on the floor. They also displayed great team work by helping each other up from the ground and encouraging each other.
Sophomore outside hitter Chayse Hoon gives her opinion on the game and how the team keeps positive, especially with team bonding .
“I think today was kind of deflating,” Hoon said. “But at the same time we have to come together and this is the most important time that we need to be one team and feel this as one, and come out stronger on Friday.”
San Diego Mesa head coach Bobbie Jo Stall-Vest gives credit to the hard work from the players for the time that they spend on team bonding.
“We spend a considerable amount of time on that, especially earlier on in the season to build a good foundation and a lot of trust amongst the players,” Stall-Vest said. “So ya, it definitely helps the chemistry on the court.”
Although the game had not ended the way the players had hoped, the team still showed respect to their opposition and kept their heads held high.
The Lancers aim to bounce back from this defeat this Friday, September 13 against Irvine Valley College.
