My Territory: Sierra Madre is my charming, haunted town that I can’t leave

Share: Cramped in the San Gabriel foothills, compressed into the mountains between Arcadia and Pasadena, Sierra Madre lays unassuming and quiet. I almost resented it for that, for never alluding to any of its secrets. For me, growing up I learned very quickly that anything worth doing in Sierra Madre was at least a twenty minute walk away. There was always the ice cream shop in Kersting Court, boasting its fresh, locally sourced flavors. But being homeschooled and wishing to do anything but complete online …

Disney followed its better instincts with ‘Zootopia 2’

Share: Zootopia 2 redeems the sins of the first movie when tackling the systemic issues within its world. While retaining the ever controversial and confusing racism coding of the original, the focus has shifted to a reptiles vs. mammals interspecies conflict rather than a greater looming tension between predators and prey. Now it is an issue of Zootopia’s borders at play, with the movie pulling at concepts of historical revisionism, gentrification, and affluent mammal families manipulating political leadership. While much whinging can be done about …

Shocking: Hasan’s critics desperate for something to be mad about

Share: Hasan Piker continues to be a polarizing figure among polarizing figures in the world of online political commentators. However, the most recent batch of criticism levied towards him concerns little about his politics, but of convoluted allegations of animal abuse. The source of these allegations occurred when Hasan’s dog, Kaya, was seen yelping as the streamer reached offscreen. The dog’s reaction combined with Hasan’s sudden frustration towards her prompted online spectators to jump to conclusions. The resulting claim was that Piker was using an …

‘Democracy requires our rage’: Pasadena wants No Kings in America

Share: “We have to fight back. And that’s what this is about. There are millions of people in the United States who are in rallies just like this. Saying ‘no’ to kings in America,” said Congresswoman Judy Chu atop the steps of Pasadena City Hall on October 18 at the No Kings Day protest “No Kings! No Kings! No Kings!” Chu chanted, her words echoed by the roaring gathering of demonstrators that were just a handful of people hours before. “And how dare he? This …

With Bari Weiss, CBS will become the Fox News 2.0 we never asked for

Share: Recently, John Oliver harshly criticized Bari Weiss on Last Week Tonight, pointing out her history of misinformation and lack of experience in news coverage. Weiss, who has recently taken the position of Editor-in-Chief of CBS News after Paramount’s acquisition of The Free Press, has a long track record railing against cancel culture, censorship and is a self-proclaimed proponent of free speech and truth. However, from Weiss’ history with reporting, it seems that the only thing she’s acting in favor of is her own personal …

The US will sink itself with Israel’s warship

Share: Many chances have come and gone for the US to pen itself into recent history as a country who fought on the right side. Now, four out of five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council have recognized Palestine as a state. With Australia, Canada, France and the UK among the nations who have recently announced their recognition at UNGA, 157 out of 193, or 81% of UN members have done the same as of Sept. 22. This marks a notable split, as …

LA Chess Social is just fun all across the board

Share: Nearly every table in the bar held a small but grand court in black and white. This court featured a king, queen, rook and bishop. Chess pieces flew from one square to the next as some players blitzed through moves. Other pieces hovered mid-air as their holders looked on with calculating gazes. The ever-present thrum of a live band’s performance burst from a corner of the room, and conversations full of laughter, playful banter, and detailed chess strategy all melded together under the sound.  …

Share: It’s been a long six months, and as of Wednesday, May 28, Elon Musk has announced his departure from the White House. However, the world’s richest man doesn’t get to make an exit without a spectacle, and a spectacle he has certainly become. A recent New York Times article outlined the full extent of Musk’s drug habit before he stumbled out of his government position, and raises the question of whether his actions coming into the administration were informed by a substance demon on …
