The Lancer women’s soccer team lost to a physical Mt. San Antonio College team, 5-1 in their South Coast Conference opener on Tuesday.Along with center midfielder Alexa Weigand, who has been out since Sept. 12, the Lancers played without forward Megan Cowie due to personal reasons.

Weigand, an All-CIF forward at La Salle High, is expected to return Friday.

The Mounties struck first with Jennifer Rivas’s score after her first two attempts were blocked PCC goalie Randi Richardson.

The Lancers quickly responded when top forward Melissa Fudge missed a shot and midfielder Alyssa Becerra took the rebound and scored the first and only goal for the Lancers in the match.

Becerra is one of the four new additions to the Lancers’ roster.

Mt. SAC added two more goals off PCC mistakes to make it 3-1 at the half.

Mt. SAC put the Lancers away, tacking on two more scores in the second half.

“Many things were a factor in the loss, all the substitutions, markings, and just simple mistakes. I know it’s not an excuse; the field kind of killed us too. Our home field is turf, and we’re not used to playing on grass. The list goes on and on,” said Assistant Coach Bree Crowley.

Despite Mt. SAC’s five goals, PCC defender Brianna Carlos prevented other chances for the Mounties to score by playing fast and textbook defense.

The Lancer’s record is now 5-3 and 0-1 in conference play. The Lancers next game is at 1 p.m. Friday against Long Beach City College at Robinson Stadium.
