A week’s break between the spring semester and summer intersession was recently approved by the board of trustees for the 2011-2012 Academic Calendar.Currently, there is no break between the two sessions. This year, summer classes begin June 21, two days after the spring semester ends on June 19.

The rest of the calendar remains the same. Four weeks of vacation time are still allotted to campus groups, but instead of a continuous block in August, the time is split: one week will be held after the spring semester ends, and the other three weeks will be held in August.

Already in effect for the 2010-2011 school year, the board’s decision to again institute the weeklong gap was a reflection of campus constituent groups who were in favor of it.

John Lindemann, the Classified Senate’s representative to the board of trustees, said the group voted to approve of the break. It would assist facilities “to get classrooms in order, and maintenance up to snuff,” he said.

The Academic Senate also approved of the change to the calendar, though the support itself was “not overwhelming,” said its president, James Bickley.

Those within the Academic Senate who were in favor of the gap, Bickley said, argued it would give extra time for faculty to get grades in, as well as allow faculty and students alike to unwind.

However, one downside would be the summer intersession’s late start and finish, he added.

Associated Students President Allen Tsay was positive about addition to the upcoming academic calendars: “It’s great for the purpose of education,” he said.

The current Associated Students Executive Board voted unanimously in favor of the break, and the Management Association was also for augmenting the calendar.
