With just 45 working days left until the scheduled completion date, construction of the refurbished Campus Center/Bookstore and the all-new Industrial Technology Building is on time, officials said. “They will all be done, as promised, on schedule, June 15,” said Director of Measure P projects Jack Schulman while addressing the Citizens’ Oversight Committee in a status meeting that took place April 22.

The committee, made up of various members of the community, is meant to inform the public of the colleges’ various bond expenditures.

The Measure P Bond is a $150 million bond approved by Pasadena Area Community College District voters in March 2002, meant to repair and rehabilitate school facilities.

Schulman described the project as “just down to the [final touches]. It really is just an exciting time.”

The renovated Campus Center/Bookstore will be home to an additional cafeteria, campus lounge, and the campus police. The Industrial Technology Building will become the new facility for the automotive, printing, welding, building construction and machine shop programs.

Director of Facility Services Richard van Pelt commented on the state of the projects’ expenditures.

“We are still in very healthy shape . with the softening economy, [construction] prices are also softening,” which bodes well for PCC, he said.

In addition to the updates on construction and budget, Interim Vice President of Administrative Services, Mark Zacovic discussed the findings of the recent Measure P audit, which found no exemptions for this period.

“We are maximizing our earning potential on those bonds,” Zacovic said.

Members of the committee were also treated to a PowerPoint presentation by van Pelt showing the many features of the pending Center for the Arts, which will replace the T Building, and is slated to begin construction following the completion of the two current projects on campus.
