The PCC water polo team had two wins and two losses in last weekend’s tournament at Citrus College, finishing fifth out of nine teams. The Lancers (8-13 for the season) started the tournament on Friday with a 9-2 loss to Orange Coast. Head Coach Terry Stoddard said it was the most challenging match of the tournament.

“They’re a formidable team and they really shut our offense down,” said Stoddard, noting that the Lancers threw only 13 shots the entire game.

“They were faster, they were quicker, and stifled our offense.”

The team came back on Saturday to win its second match, beating LA Valley 8-3. Stoddard cited the match as the strongest for the Lancers.

“That was by far our best team performance,” Stoddard said. “Our team really jelled offensively and defensively.”

He added that the best performance for the Lancers was from goalkeeper Hannah Hogue, who had 47 saves and seven steals over the tournament.

“She was on her game and really performed excellently for all four games,” Stoddard said. In the Lancer’s first match this season, Hogue had 21 saves in goal, beating the PCC record of 17.

Stoddard said that Hogue is aided by a new defensive strategy for the team.

“We incorporated a new defense that requires her to be a shot blocker. This particular defense we’re using, we’re letting [the other teams] shoot. It’s really helping,” said Stoddard.

Defensive players Mary Sanders and Shannon Adams were also instrumental in the win over LA Valley.
