The Students Unlimited club presented a check for $390 to the Disabled Students Program and Services (DSPS) on Thursday. Students Unlimited is a club for disabled students and others who support equal access to education. The club strives to promote disability awareness and it started in the fall of 2009.
Students Unlimited President Joe Duncan, accounting, presented a green check, in the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, to Assistant Dean, Kent Yamauchi in the DSPS offices. DSPS staff and members of the club were present.
Students Unlimited member J.C. Rosa, art, told the DSPS staff he wouldn’t be at school if the services DSPS provide were not available.
An American Sign Language translator interpreted the event for the hearing impaired, a visual reminder of the types of services provided by DSPS.
Duncan, who is visually impaired, said originally the money was meant for the club but, “We wanted to do something to help [DSPS].”
Duncan said it made more sense to give the money to DSPS instead of the club. “In return [the money] goes back to help students,” he said.
Duncan said the money will most likely be spent on the disabled student computer lab, which provides many services.
Duncan said that the club’s activities focus on being “beneficial to [Students Unlimited] and the city around us.”
Joanna Sales, a recent PCC graduate in business and accounting, and a former member of Students Unlimited, helps Duncan organize club activities. “Students Unlimited is here to help as a whole. We’re here to say we need help and to assist, communicating as friends,” Sales said.
Students Unlimited club members raised the money by selling candy, mostly to faculty and staff.
