Share: As conflict continues between Israel and Palestine, causing PCC students, led by the Anti-War Club, to take action to the streets of Pasadena City Hall. On Saturday, December 9th, PCC’s Anti-War Club worked in conjunction with Tempest Collective, an organization aimed to educate those unaware of global issues. Members from Tempest Collective began their teach-in by remarking that their objective is to aid this movement, not perceiving opinions. PCC Geography professor Hector Agredano commented on the significance of speaking out and hosting the teach-in. …
4-year universities and community colleges swap degree programs
Share: Amid transfer season, higher education alternatives are beginning to materialize for students who struggle with paying high tuition. While community colleges typically offer associate’s degrees and four-year universities with bachelor’s degrees, the opposite may soon be true. In other states, four-year universities such as Butler University in Indianapolis and the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis have either implemented or are preparing to implement new, two-year colleges after Chicago’s Loyola University started the model in 2015. The effort comes in response to rising college …
New PCC foster youth housing program begins in early 2024
Share: At the November Board of Trustees meeting, the trustees approved a five-year contract to rent out a six-unit housing complex near PCC’s Foothill campus, a first of its kind for the college to support its foster youth who face significant challenges obtaining secure and clean housing while in school. Because foster youth face some of the highest rates of housing insecurity and homelessness at PCC, their needs were prioritized for PCC’s first ever housing project that directly provided free housing to those in need …
Education after incarceration: CORE supports system impacted students
Share: On a Wednesday afternoon, right around lunchtime, the sound of laughter can be heard all the way down the hall of the Student Services building emanating from the office that serves as a home for PCC’s CORE Program. The laugh belonged to former PCC student, Lorenzo Byers. Byers, though not currently enrolled in classes at PCC, still likes to hang out in L-106. “It’s like a very addicting place,” said Byers, “Like you always wanna be here. I would say that this is like …
Local snobs roast your favorite coffee
Share: There is nothing hinting that you may have entered suburbia than when you check how many coffee shops are in your surrounding area. Pasadena may call itself a city, but a good espresso shot may be a misspour unless you know where to look for it. Coffee snobbery might come across like this fish, but that fish is probably the type to recommend you try Republik for its awful TJ-Maxx-art-esque interior. Copa Vida Okay, Copa Vida and its fanbase take it too seriously. But …

Share: The air was thick with competition Thursday evening in the Hugo Patterson Gym at PCC as the Lancers awaited their turn in the 6th annual Skip Robinson Tournament. Following a tense finale to a very close match between Antelope Valley College and Santiago Canyon that even left the teams waiting captivated, the Lancers were ready for their moment to prove themselves on their home court. Unfortunately for them, tonight was not their night as Chabot’s Gladiators dominated the PCC court and emerged victorious with …

After 44 years at PCC, trustee John Martin will cruise into retirement
Share: Some call John Martin a walking encyclopedia of Pasadena City College and with good reason; having served on the school’s Board of Trustees for the last 44 years, he knows the entire institution, from top to bottom. On Oct. 18 at the Board of Trustees meeting, Trustee Martin announced his retirement and his decision to not run for re-election in the 2024 election for his board seat, opening the door for others to take his position after serving on the board at PCC since …
The Roman Empire still reigns supreme on social media
Share: How often do you think about the Roman Empire? For me personally, before August 2023, I hadn’t thought about the Roman Empire since my 8th grade history class. In the ever-evolving landscape of pop culture, trends come and go, but some manage to stand the test of time. One such phenomenon has recently taken social media by storm – the “Roman Empire” trend. The trend’s roots lie in the initial question: “How much do you think about the Roman Empire?” As women probed the …
PCC celebrates Shatford Library’s illustrious history at 30th birthday party
Share: Over 30 years ago, between the E-building and lot 7, a barren plot covering about 60,000 square feet of land awaited construction. Plans for the new library began over 30 years prior, with groundwork starting in 1991. The old library, located in the L-building, opened in the summer of 1949. For the time, the new space impressed the college with the steadfast construction and the jump from 38,000 books to over 43,000 books. However, its end was imminent. On Sept. 7, 1993, a new …
