From DC to D.C.: How one professor integrates comics into the classroom

Share: Javier sat pensively in the back row of his English class as an old and grainy YouTube upload of the “I Have a Dream” speech played one morning, early in the 2014 fall semester at PCC. While initially very quiet and reserved in class, it was clear to professor Dustin Hanvey that Javier always had a lot more he wanted to say. As the fuzzy video continued playing, Javier proved his professor right. He raised his hand and jokingly suggested the class take a …

‘Blue Beetle’ scribe leaves students buzzing over Latinx cinema

Share: From the pages of comic books to the silver screen, “Blue Beetle” made its way to theaters in August of last year. It deeply resonated with audiences through its family-focused narrative that parallels writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer’s own story.  On Thursday, May 30, students filled the auditorium in room 101 of the Center for the Arts building. Aspiring filmmakers and writers alike were eager to expand their knowledge of filmmaking and the intricacies of screenwriting from Dunnet-Alcocer’s experience.  “So what I really appreciated and what …

New building woes: The shrunken science structure U won’t fit in

Share: Professors in the natural sciences division at the May Board of Trustees meeting raised concerns that current designs for the new U building would not provide sufficient office or lab space to accommodate the classes moving in upon its completion. “So regarding the concerns over the office space, we have been assigned a space of five and a half by six feet which we would argue is inadequate to serve our students,” biology professor Richard Lie said at the meeting. In a separate unlisted …

Movie studios are tripping over themselves to devour each other

Share: In what feels like a never-ending contest of shameless corporate gluttony, talks of a potential acquisition of Paramount Global by Sony Pictures and U.S.-based asset management firm Apollo Global Management have thankfully died down, at least for the time being. However,  Sony isn’t the first company to proposition Paramount this past year and it sure as hell won’t be the last.  Following their own surprising merger, Warner Bros. Discovery—despite taking on massive amounts of debt from the previous leadership, plummeting stock prices that typically …

Clickbait: Get hooked on PCC’s fishing club treading into new water

Share: If you’re angling to spend more time with like-minded piscary participants, hone in your knot tying skills, or just really want a new hobby, the PCC Fishing club is ready to reel you in. Established in late 2018, the club has functioned as a space where fishing aficionados meet weekly to learn about the various species of aquatic life they typically find, whether that’s in fresh or saltwater. “Really, the fishing club is for anyone, if you’re just a weekend warrior and want to …

‘Challengers’ serves up carnal chaos

Share: With a premise that shares more in common with an erotic thriller from the 90s than your average sports movie, it’s all the more impressive that Luca Guadagnino’s tennis-centered sensual drama is not only endlessly entertaining but among the best releases of an already impressive early 2024.  Where “Challengers” succeeds most is in its overall execution. While the story and characters are certainly strong enough to maintain a compelling, if not slightly soapy narrative, the key lies in how these elements are brought to …

Two individuals remove PCC Pride Center flag in apparent targeted act

Share: In an alleged targeted attack against Pasadena City College’s (PCC) LGBTQ population, a Pride Flag was “taken down” by two individuals from outside PCC’s Pride Center, early on Sunday April 14 in an incident reported by PCC’s Title IX office.   Prior to the flag being removed it hung from PCC’s R building right in front of where the Pride Center is located.  “It’s with heavy hearts that we must share that the Pride Flag outside of our center was torn down,” PCC Pride Center …

Share: Bobbi Abram, the Executive Director of the Pasadena City College Foundation, is retiring from her position after 12 years and will be joining the Santa Barbara City College Foundation as their new chief executive officer starting at the beginning of May.  The retirement coincides with the foundation going through its own internal transitions, as former PCC Trustee Hoyt Hilsman is expected to be elected by the foundation board as president in the coming months, according to Abram in an interview in mid-March. The position …

Lancers softball mauled by Huskies, continues losing streak

Share: What started off as a deceptively balanced match eventually descended into disaster for PCC as ELAC’S Huskies dominated the last two innings, securing a 9-5 victory over the Lancers on their home field.  The majority felt like a close game of tug of war with each inning serving to give either team a slight edge, but nothing more.  Breanna Negrete scored the 3rd run for PCC in the 5th inning after a strategic single from Alysa Rojas gave her the opening, bringing the score …
