PCC women’s soccer team needed just half the game to impose its clear dominance over Los Angeles Harbor College in a 6-0 home victory Tuesday.Eventually, the best defense is offense.

With a 4-4-2 formation, having side-defenders Claudia Lomeli and Carolina Rangel attacking along with the side-midfielders Kristie Castellon and Makenzie Pedrotti, the Lancers came out with a sweeping-attack mentality from the first minute of the game, trying to suffocate the Seahawks’ defense.

“I told the girls to pressure them early in the game and score as many goals as possible,” said Soccer Director Cherif Zein.

Two minutes into the game, midfielder Sheima Berenji put the Lancers up, 1-0, connecting a cross coming from the left side by Castellon with a potent shot – impossible for Harbor’s keeper Yvonne Velazquez to reach.

In the fourth minute, Elba Menjivar took charge of a penalty kick after Pedrotti received a foul in the box. Menjivar put the ball in the back of the net, extending the score to 2-0. She also scored the fourth goal for the Lancers in the 29th minute.

“I received a long through ball by Merakka [Augenstein], letting me be one-on-one against the keeper. I hit the ball on [the keeper’s] left post, I followed the rebound and I just toe-poked it in,” said Menjivar, who tallies nine goals so far this season.

Teammate Pedrotti had her own show. She scored the third goal in the sixth minute, and the fifth goal before the referee called the first half. Both goals came from Berenji’s throw-ins in the right side.

L.A. Harbor wasn’t able to create any offensive damage. Harbor’s ace card Keyontae Atkinson was well controlled by the PCC’s defense, giving security to the Lancer goalkeeper Priscilla Castellon.

At the end of the first half, the Lancers outscored the Seahawks in shots at goal, 10-0.

In the second 45 minutes, the team was dedicated to taking care of the ball by keeping possession, moving the ball side to side, and letting the time pass by. The transition of the team’s movement, throughout the second half, was on the feet of midfielders Kimberly Amaya, Pedrotti, and stopper Cindy Aguillon.

It wasn’t until the 78th minute that midfielder Castellon scored the sixth and last goal of the match, after she evaded two rivals and finished her great play with a strong low shot that hit the post and went in the net.

Berenji, who replaced keeper Castellon in the second half, ended with two saves, while Harbor’s keeper Velazquez ended with eight.

The Lancers, ranked No.#6 in the South Region and No.#12 in the state before the game, are looking forward to make the same performance against El Camino College on Tuesday, at the Warriors’ stadium.

“If we beat El Camino on Tuesday, we will be pretty much in the playoffs. We will go with the same attitude,” Zein said.
