Student integrity and honesty is one of the most important parts of a successful college.  PCC’s Student Conduct and Integrity Policy is a fundamental aspect when it comes to dealing with misconduct and cheating.

The updated Student Integrity and Conduct Policy recently approved by the Academic Senate now states the responsibilities of faculty when it comes to cheating and plagiarism. Students that cheat take away from the integrity of the entire school, and faculty and students now have impartial instructions to follow when confronting misconduct.

The changes made to the policy greatly benefit teachers and students when confronting misconduct.

“The integrity of our grades depends on our students doing their own work,” said Academic Senate Vice President Dustin Hanvey in an email regarding the policy.

Hanvey added that honesty and integrity are the basis of making students successful. Only honest students can make an accurate representation of their efforts, and only honest student will truly succeed, he said.

“The changes made are to create a list of responsibilities of faculty, staff, administrators and students in terms of supporting academic honesty on campus,” Hanvey added.

The Student Conduct and Academic Honesty policy outlines how students and faculty should conduct themselves on campus. It identifies conduct that is prohibited on campus, everything from cheating and plagiarism to bringing alcohol on campus.

The new addition to the policy gives teachers ways to deal with students that are caught cheating. “Students cannot be prevented from completing an examination simply because it is suspected that they have cheated,” the policy states.

Teachers are advised by the policy to stop the cheating, record their names and report them to the vice president for Student Learning Services. They are to undertake an investigation into the alleged cheating and to follow the due process procedures provided in the Student Code of Conduct Policy.

Teachers are also allowed to restrict students from leaving the classroom during an exam period, so take that bathroom break before the big exam.

It is the policy of PCC to maintain a safe, orderly, and constructive campus environment, and to allow freedom to learn and respect for all members of the community.   The changes made now help define what responsibilities faculty have when dealing with misconduct. It is a responsibility of all members of the PCC community to uphold the integrity of the school.
