The editors of PCC‘s literary magazine Inscape gather in a circle, each with the same story in hand.

They discuss various opinions and comments about the submitted pieces that are poetry, non fiction and fiction. Questions are raised: what is considered a literary story? Was the story engaging and is it relevant to what they are looking for?

The editors don’t always agree on whether a story should be put in the magazine but they are all open to discussion about how they feel about it.

“The story has to be well written,” said Ikea Fletcher, English.

The rest of the group jumps in to elaborate.

“I would like to see the writers put heart and soul into their stories,” said Matthew Martins, English.

For over four years Christopher Mc Cabe has advised the Inscape editors, otherwise known as English 7A.

“I would like to see stories that are representative of subjects that concern the students,” he said. “I am here to help shape the magazine but the editors do the work.”

Inscape Magazine has been published for over 50 years and has been representative of each decade and what the students are going through.

The class discusses the issues of the campus now, gay and lesbian issues, and returning veterans from the war.

“I would like to see stories that are diverse, on religion and things that range on the culture of PCC,” Fletcher said.

“There are great writers here on campus and I have heard great stories in my classes. This is what I want to read,” Fletcher said.

The group, which has a rare connection of communication and humor, goes back to its informal but concentrated work. Mc Cabe interjects every once in awhile with comments that open the editors minds and create more discussion.

“I like doing this,” Mc Cabe said, “which is why I like coming back.”

They hope to receive more stories by the extended deadline of Oct 21.  For information on submitting a story to Inscape, go to the English Department in C245 or email Christopher Mc Cabe at cjmccabe@pasadena.edu.
