Dual enrollment soars, but can PCC keep up high numbers?

Share: Amid changing demographics for community colleges, PCC presented new enrollment strategies to the Board of Trustees at the Nov. 15 Board meeting.  This comes at a time as California community colleges are experiencing enrollment returning back to pre-pandemic levels, but now with a different demographic. As of this academic year, the under-20 demographic has become the majority of students attending community college, surpassing the 20 to 29 age group for the first time. This is in part to high school students who are taking …

‘Scott Pilgrim Takes Off’ has the guts to change the story

Share: Two decades ago in Toronto, Canada Scott Pilgrim was dating a high schooler and it was more problematic than my 16-year-old brain could comprehend. Recently, Netflix has released its anime adaptation ‘Scott Pilgrim Takes Off’ and by the end of the first episode the plot literally takes off, leaving the original storyline behind. It is possibly the boldest and smartest move any adaptation has ever done. The 2010 film ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ is considered by fans a perfect adaptation of the original …

Local snobs roast your favorite coffee

Share: There is nothing hinting that you may have entered suburbia than when you check how many coffee shops are in your surrounding area. Pasadena may call itself a city, but a good espresso shot may be a misspour unless you know where to look for it. Coffee snobbery might come across like this fish, but that fish is probably the type to recommend you try Republik for its awful TJ-Maxx-art-esque interior. Copa Vida Okay, Copa Vida and its fanbase take it too seriously. But …

Trustees approve PCC Presidential search timeline and committee appointments

Share: At the November Board of Trustees (BOT) meeting the board publicized and approved the PCC presidential search timeline, committee appointments and a document outlining what PCC’s constituency groups, shared governance and on-campus community is looking for in their next permanent Superintendent-President.  The preliminary preparations and creation of the search profile have been going on since late September when the Board hired AGB Search to facilitate the process.  As a part of the undertaking since their hiring, AGB Search has hosted several listening sessions with …

Hasan Minhaj isn’t guiltless but it’s OK to lie in comedy

Share: What started off as an uncomfortable controversy from the New Yorker accusing comedian Hasan Minhaj of lying about his life has turned into asking, why are we fact-checking comedians to begin with? Are performers allowed to embellish their stories for emotional gain? Look, a good story isn’t always a factually accurate one. If you want to captivate an audience, sometimes you have to over-exaggerate for people to follow along. This was Minhaj’s argument back at the New Yorker when he posted a 20-minute-long rebuttal …

Lancers clip Falcons’ wings, extend winning streak

Share: Cerritos crescendoed into a challenging roar at the start of the first PCC serve Wednesday night, but they couldn’t distract the Lancers with now a 17-6 win streak under the net.  Prior to the first serve, outside hitter Emma Yogan was presented with a golden ball to commemorate her milestone of 500 kills with the Lancers. Her game with the Falcons upped her score even more. Yogan scored eight kills in the first set alone and at the conclusion of the contest, had reached …

C you later: C-Building is now the Jack Scott Building

Share: Celebrating his legacy and commitment to the college, the Pasadena City College Board of Trustees re-dedicated the administration building to honor former PCC president Dr. Jack Scott at a ceremony last Thursday. Scott served as president of Pasadena City College from 1987 to 1995, laying the groundwork for a $150 million bond program that revitalized the college’s facilities and infrastructure. During his presidency, he oversaw the construction of five new buildings, including the Shatford Library. “Even after he began his retirement, although we all …

Student loan relief doesn’t ease the burden for borrowers

Share: Last year, I woke up to the most surreal news when President Joe Biden forgave my outstanding student loan debt and declared me almost debt free. This week I was reminded that 6 out of 9 people decided that was stupid and slapped me in the face with my debt again. Now after three years of payments being paused, millions of Americans are coming face to face with their student loans again, but some know their debt will never be paid off. For college …

Mitski’s new album is her most loving

Share: Gone are the days of Mitski being “The Only Heartbreaker.” Her seventh studio album, “The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We” was released earlier this month and she has transformed her work from dancebeat heartaches into an overflowing melancholy of love.  For fans of Mitski, this album announcement came as a surprise. Four years earlier, she deleted her social media and appeared to be done with music. However, Mitski was contractually obligated by her record label to release one more album. In October …
