Changing careers might mean becoming a student again—and that’s OK

Share: This article was written by Courier Editor-in-Chief Laura Dux and originally published in EdSource. When I decided to enroll in community college, my goal wasn’t to get a degree — I wanted a new job. I have my bachelor’s degree in acting and was a professional actor until the pandemic. At 25, I was happy with my life as an actor. My calendar was even booked out for the entire year, performing in theaters across the state of Washington. A week before I was …

Math prerequisites are going away, get ready for AI tutors

Share: California Community Colleges (CCCs) have eradicated the majority of foundational math courses due to the passage of assembly bill 1705 in 2022 which was designed to combat inequities in college students’ placement and completion of coursework. With this new law, concerns about student outcomes have risen–leading to the recent development of MathGPT: an AI tutor announced on October 16th of this year, meant to bridge the educational gap left behind by this bill.  Assembly bill 1705 is in conjunction with AB 705 was introduced …

Republican promises to protect victims of rape are mired in blatant hypocrisy

Share: Grappling with the outcome of one of its most controversial and divisive elections, America’s TV screens are flooded with a myriad of controversial campaign ads advocating for one candidate or another. Much of this recent backlash has been attributed to a series of ads run by candidate Juan Ciscomani, a republican politician running for the seat of Arizona’s 6th congressional district.  In late September, Ciscomani published a series of political ads in which he clarified his stance on issues such as abortion and contraceptive …

Hands-on native plant project sprouts up at PCC

Share: The strip of lawn that once consisted of grass, hedges, and sprinklers in front of the C-building’s eastward entrance has undergone a series of major overhauls, culminating in the creation of a space covered in California native plants. This past Friday, Nov. 8, student volunteers from the Environmental Sustainability and CORE clubs planted California native plants and began installing drip irrigation lines after two weeks of education and preparation. For three consecutive Fridays now, from 12 to 1 p.m., student volunteers have been welcomed …

Dodger ‘fan’ riots were a swing in the wrong direction

Share: After an amazing win by the Dodgers, some of their supposed fans took to the streets in an appalling showcase of poor sportsmanship by looting, rioting, and vandalizing LA. Since then there has been finger pointing with Dodger fans getting the blame. It should be apparent, however, those who took to the streets were simply people who were searching for any excuse to do whatever they want.  It was difficult to believe that such a thing would happen when first seeing news coverage. Police …

Lancers end three-year climb to summit Mt. San Antonio

Share: Pasadena defeated Mt. San Antonio in a back and forth match that saw all 5 sets being played out this past Wednesday.  The 1st set was quickly decided in less than half an hour in favor of the Lancers with a score of 25-18. An intense 2nd set saw the crowd getting up on their feet for a tight game that saw both teams tied down to the final score. A deadlock 22-22 score left room for Pasadena to secure its consecutive set win, …

Stop trying to cancel Tyler, The Creator

Share: It seems that almost every two years, a new group of people discover Tyler, The Creator’s older music and flip a table about the subject matter he included in his art from the embryonic stage of his discography. While it is absolutely no secret that his past lyrics have been comically offensive and problematic, it seems that no matter how hard people try to cancel him over it, the campaign to denounce Tyler Okonma never gains any momentum. Tyler’s tremendous influence and growth into …

Lancers give Glendale a goose egg to stay undefeated

Share: Pasadena shutout the Glendale Vaqueros in a 12-0 win this past Saturday. The team secured its bid to the American Championship Bowl after a second consecutive division title and now aims to finish the regular season undefeated for the first time in 50 years. A Lancers offense that averaged 40 points a game entering Saturday, struggled to score the entire match following an injury to sophomore quarterback Kaden Taylor early in the first quarter. Injuries at the quarterback position have been an issue in …

HBCU caravan brings opportunities to Black students beyond California

Share: As students amass in PCC’s quad what stands out most are the similarities found in the crowd’s differences. Some choose to wear their hair in braids, others locs, and many in ‘fros, different expressions of the blackness they share, an important aspect of the day’s occasion. Most who’ve gathered here have come to attend HBCUish, PCC’s event where Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are invited to mostly interact with Black students to provide information about their institutions.  “Pasadena is always going to be …

ASPCC’s ‘cozy’ Harry Potter party post-election is cringe

Share: My memories of ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ are intense. Like millions of other millennials, I had been in line to buy the book at midnight on its release day, both younger siblings at my side. At the time, our parents were going through a divorce. So when we happily left the bookstore with our prize, we found ourselves caught in the middle of parental politics that left the three of us briefly homeless. It was 1:00 a.m. and we were welcome at …
