Share: In the last few weeks, various GOP-controlled states have considered limiting resources for gender-affirming care or banning access to minors and their families altogether. Of the states with bills containing anti-trans and nonbinary rhetoric concerning healthcare, there is a myriad of myths muddying the manifold services that fall under gender-affirming care. “Gender-affirming healthcare is healthcare, and LGBTQIA+ people deserve to be cared for in a way that is safe and supportive,” said Mallory Corben, the president of PCC’s Queer Alliance. In 2023 legislative sessions …
De La Soul’s streaming arrival signals need to straighten our priorities
Share: Although it took years of heated label disputes for the group’s back catalog to arrive on streaming, the timing of De La Soul’s reintroduction couldn’t be better. Though their debut album, “3 Feet High and Rising,” paved the way for other alternative hip-hop artists to follow, the exposure allows new listeners to learn why the issues De La Soul touched on still sadly resonate 34 years later. Nineteen days before their first six albums could hit streaming services, founding member Trugoy the Dove passed …
Lancers keep El Camino at bay in second game win
Share: Riding high on back-to-back wins earlier in the week, the PCC baseball team claimed another win on Friday, March 3, against the El Camino Warriors at Brookside Park’s Jackie Robinson Field in a clean victory, finishing 5-2. After the Lancers quickly established their two-point lead in the bottom of the first inning, El Camino struggled to pick up the pace. The rowdy chanting on the Warriors’ side led to the team’s first point, turning into a game of cat and mouse. Who was the …
White-nose syndrome targets bats, but humans shouldn’t turn a blind eye
Share: A bat colony prepares their hibernation in a North American cave during the cold hours of fall 2007. Until spring comes in time for insect populations to increase, these bats will remain in a deep sleep largely uninterrupted, living off accumulated fat that will last through the winter. The caves themselves drop down to temperatures as low as 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Far too bitter for humans but ideal for bats escaping the incoming winter winds. These temperatures are also ideal for a particular strand …
New food service building will replace Café de Leche in 2025
Share: By 2025, PCC plans to replace Café de Leche with a new food service building in Galloway Plaza, where students can have access to more food, beverages, and study spaces. A Board of Trustees meeting estimated that the building, which would include a food grill, pick-up venue, microwaves, vending machines, and service windows, would cost at around $5 million. A new coffee bar would also be included, replacing Café de Leche as a result. To further provide services for students on all corners of …
‘The Last of Us’ deviates from game and elevates into prestige TV
Share: With half of its episodes yet to be released, “The Last of Us” is one of the best shows TV has to offer. The new HBO series opened to universal praise solely from the first two episodes. The much-talked-about third episode, “Long, Long Time,” showed the series is adept at adapting the original story and creating new compelling plotlines in the best episode yet. Now at the halfway point, the show has already proven to be essential viewing. After Joel and Ellie nearly escaped …
‘Knock at the Cabin’ almost knocks it out of the park
Share: “Knock at the Cabin” is a rare sight for filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, where the movie manages to impress and disappoint. At best, he reaches the early highs of his career marked by blockbusters such as “The Sixth Sense” and “Signs.” At worst, his failure to stick the landing harkens back to the disaster of “The Last Airbender.” “Knock at the Cabin” falls under this narrow margin, but not without striving for brilliance. Wen and her two dads, Eric and Andrew, drive to a …
And the award for most boring television broadcast goes to…
Share: For an industry whose main priority is making entertainment that attracts the largest audience, Hollywood excels in creating comatose-inducing award shows commemorating the quintessential “best” movies and TV shows. Unsurprisingly, that’s just the start of their many faults and hypocritical megalomania. When NBC canceled the Golden Globes ceremony in 2022 after a Los Angeles Times investigation revealed the awards body had no black members, the 2023 broadcast was poised for a momentous comeback. To their credit, ratings only fell by about 9% compared to …
Free transportation for PCC students makes life easier
Share: For his first time attending PCC, freshman Jagger Freedberg faced some complications before he walked into his first class. On top of a part-time job and not owning a car he could use when needed, his only option for commuting back and forth between home and campus was the Metro. But when public transit is the only form of transportation, bus fares could quickly build up within a few short weeks and become another burden for full-time students. To ease transportation expenses, Freedberg felt …
