The women’s soccer team played the two opening games of the 2013 season at the Ventura Showcase Tournament on August 30 and 31. Beginning with a loss to Orange Coast College 2-0, the women bounced back to beat West Valley College 1-0.

“The first game we were a little bit unsteady,” Cassandra Saavedra said. “we really didn’t work that well together because that was our first game [of the season], by the next day we were able to connect. I think we might have a better team than last year.”

Last year the women made it to the first round of the playoffs, but were taken out in a heartbreaking overtime loss to Santa Monica.

“We play in the toughest league in California,” Coach Reggie Rivas said. “Cerritos won the regional championship last season. I think every game is going to be important, every goal is important, every save is important.”

“I am up for the challenge, and I know the girls are up for the challenge, this is a very good group of girls, we have a lot of great players here, and they are coming along really well.”

In the second game of the tournament against West Valley Tournament, Amanda Papic scored the goal for the Lancers. “Our girls were hammering their defense really well,” Papic said. “I just got really lucky and got a shot on goal and hit the top right corner. But it was only because the girls were doing so well at pushing up, we had our full offensive line forward.”

Freshman Bailey Shaw, who plays in the center of defense, discussed how the women began to work together in the second game, “We got a lot of momentum once we get to know each other, figure out how we all play,” Shaw said. “In the second game we changed our defense a little bit, and it was easier to play from the back and work forward.”

The women’s first home game is on Friday Sept 6 at Robinson stadium at 5 p.m. against Moorpark.
