The Athletics Department is in the final stages of hiring for two open positions, both of which are expected to be filled by July 1.

According to Sports Information Specialist Robert Lewis, the athletic coordinator position is currently in the final interview process while interviews for the position of physical education instructor/football coach will begin this week.

Dr. Jacqueline Jacobs, PCC’s vice president of instruction, is currently acting as the interim dean for the department.

According to Joe Peron, the head coach of the women’s basketball team, one person oversaw the sports program as well as physical education classes at PCC in the past.

“[Rocha’s] vision is one person for [each] job and I’m looking forward to that,” Peron said. “Since it’s so much work, I’m glad he’s trying to separate [the two positions].”

Currently the Planning Committee’s subcommittee for the athletics department is supposed to envision the future of the department, said Peron.

It was announced at last month’s Academic Senate meeting that the Athletics Department had been granted two one-year emergency hires for the athletic coordinator and physical education/football coach positions.

The announcement was made by Athletic Department representative and Swimming Coach Terry Stoddard, and was confirmed by Patty Gallego, athletic trainer and liaison of a subcommittee of the hiring committee.

“I’m looking forward to [PCC President Mark] Rocha’s vision for the athletic department,” Peron said. “[I hope he overcomes] whatever obstacles there are to make it separate like at four-year universities. Athletics should have its own director.”
