The Cross Cultural Center and the Student Health Services teamed up to host a women’s health workshop on Oct. 18 in the Creveling Lounge.”The students can get up to date health information that is useful in their everyday lives,” said Joe Buczko the Health Services Coordinator.

“It also reinforces what health behaviors they are already doing well and helps them identify ways of changing unhealthy behaviors,” Buczko said.

Five workshops were set up around the room: nutrition, wellness for every woman, sexually transmitted diseases, vaccination and yoga.

At the nutrition station an on-campus dietitian talked about how important it is to have good nutrition as a woman. She taught students how to read nutrition labels, calculate your calories from fat and told students what they should stay away from.

Wellness for Every Woman had a nurse practitioner discuss on signs of breast cancer, cervical cancer and body image. In the Sexually Transmitted Diseases corner, Buczko spoke about signs and how to be safe from pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases such as herpes, chlamydia, syphilis, and gonorrhea.

At the vaccination center an on campus RN specialist informed students of the vaccinations they need to have such as chickenpox vaccine, hepatitis A and B vaccine, Influenza, Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine and Tdap for whooping cough.

A yoga instructor also taught easier breathing techniques to prevent stress.

“Yoga taught me a different way to deal with stress,” said Sandy Castro, a hospitality manager major.

“If we can inform students, they will tell their friends,” said Carrie Afuso, coordinator for the Cross Cultural Center. Breast cancer month is in October, Afuso explained, it’s a perfect time for a woman’s health seminar.

“I think that no matter how much you know a topic, it’s important to update yourself,” said Megan Quan, Psychology major.
