The PCC women’s basketball team sent their sophomores out in style Wednesday night, crushing the Cubs of L.A. City College 97-36. The gutsy Cubs were outgunned as well as outmanned. The Cubs have been decimated by injuries and suited up five players, as they fell victim to PCC’s 11 deep rotation.Despite the injuries to their opponent, Coach Joe Peron made it clear to the team that cruising was not an option. “I’ve learned not to relax, regardless of the caliber of team that we’re up against,” he said.

When a few players did let up a bit, Coach Peron jumped at the chance to rein his players in. “For two minutes, a couple of players who didn’t play the caliber of ball they should’ve been, so I went ahead and sat them for 12 minutes,” Peron said.

The players responded with a 52-18 second half after taking a 27-point lead into halftime. Freshman Easter Faafiti led the way with 18 points, Keisha Phelps dominated with 17 points and 11 rebounds and Melia Basavand provided long-range fireworks, scoring 12 points on 4 of 6 from 3-point range.

The final regular season home game served as a sendoff. Sophomores Kieisha Phelps and Florence Wilson (dubbed by Coach Joe Peron as “the two best post players in Junior College basketball”), and transfers Lynette Jacobs and Anna Magganas all started their final regular season home game at PCC, receiving flowers and hugs from Coach Peron during the pre-game intros at half court. Freshman Kinyada Johnson joined the four sophomores to comprise the starting five.

The game also served as a message to the rest of the state that the Lancers are ready for the playoffs. With their remaining game at L.A. Harbor (9-17), the Lancers should enter the Southern California Regional Playoffs, beginning on March 1 and may even have an opportunity to host a game, depending on seeding.
