As the newly elected vice-president of campus activities and a busy finance major, Joan Tibay of Associated Students spends a lot of time in Pasadena. Her weekends, as she shared with the Courier, are almost exclusively Pasadena affairs as well.
By the time Sunday afternoon rolls around, the 22-year-old says she squeezes in unfinished school work and, in the summer, more “gyming.”
1. Twin Palms, Pasadena
Friday night I work at a restaurant from 5 p.m. to about 11 or 12. If I’m free, though, I go out to dinner with friends and have a ‘Sex and the City’-type night. I’m more geared towards fine dining, so we might go to some place like Twin Palms. I love their appetizers.
2. 24 Hour Fitness
I don’t work on Saturday, so I get to wake up late – 12 o’clock or something. If there’s nothing to do and I’m stuck at home, I’ll clean my room. In the afternoon, though, I go gyming with my friends at 24 Hour Fitness. It’s funny, because the entire board goes to the same gym.
3. Famima!! Pasadena
After the gym, we go to Famima!! on Madison and Colorado. It’s like a convenience store, but more expensive.
I buy the smoked salmon cream cheese rice bowl, which, at $1.50, is actually pretty cheap, but they only give you little slivers of salmon.
4. Tacos el Gallito taco truck on Fair Oaks in Pasadena
Saturday night, the AS and AGS group often goes to this taco truck on Fair Oaks Avenue. I order chicharrones – they’re delicious.
5. Pasadena City Hall
After the taco truck, we go to the Pasadena City Hall. It’s really nice there. We just sit by the fountain and talk until people begin to go home.
6. IHOP on Arroyo in Pasadena
If the members of AS and AGS have a party on a Saturday night, but there’s no food, we might go to IHOP to get something to eat.
We always go to the one on Arroyo. I tend to order a variety of stuff – I never stick to one dish, but I do like the spinach omelet.
7. Church service, Studio City
Sunday I go to church in Studio City, where I teach Sunday school. It’s a big part of my week. The one to three-year-olds, it’s mostly just watching them, but when they turn three, four, five, that’s when we begin to teach them the curriculum.
8. Golden Deli Vietnamese Restaurant, San Gabriel
After church, I go to lunch with my family. The restaurant’s usually their choice, so it’s usually an Asian place. I sometimes think, “Don’t we ever get tired of this?” The favorite is Golden Deli in San Gabriel.
