The PCC women’s soccer team lost to Long Beach City College on Friday, 2-1, after leading at half time. The Lancers struck first in the thirteenth minute when defender Caroline Rangel scored on a set play. The Lancer defense proved sturdy as they caught the Vikings several times using the offside trap.
The Second half proved too much for the Lancers, however, as Long Beach was able to score two unanswered goals with the help of some sharp through passing.
The first goal PCC gave up came when goalie Randi Richardson was caught out of position and could not deflect a lobed shot on goal. Shortly after, the Vikings converted a well placed cross over Richardson who attempted to punch the ball away but proved too late to make the save.
Rangel was one of the many people who believed the ball never crossed the plan into the net.
“That was a bad call by the refs,” said Rangel, “one of many.”
Tempers wore thin as all four of the game’s yellow cards came in the second half.
Head Coach Cherif Zein was unavailable for comment as he was already preparing for the Men’s Soccer game in the locker room.
Assistant Coach Breanne Crowley thought his team played clumsily.
“It was simply a sloppy game. Some of the fouls really got into their heads and took over the game,” Crowley said.
