The Pasadena City College women’s water polo team is entering the 2009 season with high hopes and goals of reaching the playoffs. A large freshman class joins five returning players.Hannah Houge a freshman goalie has huge shoes to fill this season as she tries to start off where PJ Starr left off. Starr last season was a first team All Conference All-Star goalie. Starr has graduated and will not be in the team this year.

Houge is part of the Temple City freshman trio. Joining Houge are Annika Fuerres and Catharina Clock. Nicole Young, a Cal Poly transfer who is left-handed, is also joining the team

Terry Stoddard has been coaching the PCC water polo team for 11 years. This is the first time in Stoddard’s career that he has so many returning players. Putting last year’s losing record behind him, Stoddard has high hopes for the upcoming this season.

“I am really optimistic we can challenge the best teams in our conference. I feel strongly that we will make the playoffs,” said Stoddard.

The strength of the water polo team will be the positional players, according to Stoddard but he is concerned about the depth of the team. Stoddard is hoping to capitalize on the five returnees to improve on last year’s record of 8-20.

“Once the new players learn the system we will be ok. We are counting on the returning players to lead us this year,” said Stoddard.

The veteran leadership, an element lacking from last year’s team, isn’t an issue this year. Last years team was mostly compiled of fresh faces and had little veteran leadership.

“Three teams in the conference make the playoffs, the top two team’s in our conference played in the championships. I am confident that we be competitive and make the playoffs this season,” said Stoddard
