The women’s volleyball team defeated the ELAC Huskies in three straight sets, 25-9, 25-19, 25-18 Wednesday at Hutto- Patterson gym. Coach Silva wasn’t pleased with the way the team performed. “We came out flat and weren’t hungry at all. We have to come out with more energy and more aggression in the upcoming games,” said Silva.

This is the 14th win in a row for the Lancers. Their 13th win was an upset over the top ranked team in California.

No. 1 El Camino came to Hutto-Patterson gym ready to prove its dominance Friday. After losing the first set, the No. 6 Lancers rebounded and upset El Camino in four sets, 16-25, 25-17, 25-14, 29-27, giving El Camino womens volleyball team it’s first defeat of the season.

The Lancers took flight and dominated the second set from the start. Sophomore Galia Sotomayor threw her body around with reckless abandonment to keep the ball alive. Freshman Jessica Xu helped set up 13 kills as the Lancers won the second set 25-17.

Freshmen Patricia Blasco and Sophomore Nicole Holmes, both had 16 kills for the game, stopping El Camino every time it tried to rally. There was no let up to this team. It was mentally focused and ready for the big showdown. Holmes guaranteed a victory over El Camino after last week’s victory against Long Beach.

“I knew we were a better team than they were. Every time they rallied we stayed strong as a team and hungry. For every point they scored we would get four,” said Holmes.

The Lancers started the third period down 5-1. After Coach Tammy Silva called a quick timeout, the Lancers once again came out. Freshman Miranda Doing played great defense and had three kills for the game. The Lancers won the third set 25-14.

“We called timeout when they were about to rally, to slow their rhythm down. Once we got out of the timeout we wanted to start attacking,” said Silva.

Before the start of the fourth set the home crowd came alive. The men’s football team, men’s and women’s soccer team, women’s national champion basketball team were screaming different fight songs.

“Our fans were very supportive. I was happy with all the love they were giving us. They motivated us all to come out with more intensity,” said Sotomayor.

The Lancers jumped to an early lead to start the fourth set. El Camino wouldn’t go away as it came back from an 18-12 deficit to regain the lead 24-23. They went back and forth, neither team giving an inch.

“We were so determined to win, this was our goal from the start of the season. We weren’t about to let this game get away,” said Holmes. Because the game must be won by two points, each team traded blows and giving it their all. Oddly, Sotomayor was on the bench for most of the final moments of the fourth set.

“We weren’t worried and definitely not scared in the closing minutes of the game. We did everything it takes to get this victory,” said Blasco.

Sotomayor entered the game in the closing minutes, and it ended with consecutive kills by Holmes and Blasco.

“I thought the game was going to five sets. When Blasco and Holmes got the last kills I knew the game was over,” said Silva.
