It was a victory day for Lancer track and field athletes as they advanced to the South Coast Conference Championship finals in Tuesday’s prelims held at Mt. San Antonio College.”Peek all the way through,” said Track and Field Head Coach Larry Wade to his Lancer runners. “You have to run the fastest and pay attention. Don’t be afraid. Hold you momentum and your composure together.”

Track runner John Lee finished in seventh place with a time of 14.88 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles advancing him to finals. Eddie Tripp came in ninth place, with a time of 15.31. He also advanced in the 400-meter hurdles coming in fourth place with a time of 53.83.

“I feel pretty good. I’m glad I made it. On Friday, I’m going for first place,” said Tripp.

In the 400-meter dash, three of the Lancer athletes advanced to the finals. Stephen Peevy got first place with time of 48.51. Korey Brown, track and field captain, came in third, with a 48.84 time and Vincent Bryant came in eighth place finishing at 49.85.

The women also advanced in the 400-meter dash. Tenia Sebastian placed third with a time of 57.56 and Natasha Darkuah placed ninth with a finishing time of 1:02.68.

Two women advanced in the 800-meter dash. Tracee van der Wyk won first place in her 800 heat and second place overall with a time of 2:16.81, falling short of first place. Van der Wyk also ran the 1,500 where she came in second place. She also ran the 10,000 coming in third but less than a second short of first place finisher, Mt. SAC.

Richard Zarazua came in eighth place in the 800-meter dash. He finished in 1:59.43 advancing him to the finals. Cerritos College came in first.

In the 10,000-meter run, Will Zentmyer advanced to the finals, finishing fifth place with a time of 33:39.94, falling short less than one second to Cerritos College.

The Lancer athletes are excited that their hard work and dedication is taking them to the finals. “It feels really good,” said team Captain Brown. “We have to win our heat to get to the next step. We are doing what we have to do to make it to the finals on Friday.”

On the field side, Daniel Walker won fourth place in the final javelin throw at 47.93-meters. Robert Pachorek advanced to finals getting seventh place in the long jump with a 6.66-meter distance. Melanie Samvalian got third place in the shot put with an 11.61-meter distance.

“Team members have shown a lot of Lancer pride,” said Coach Wade of his athletes. “Almost every one of [them] have made the finals in their individual events.

“All the coaches have done a great job of getting the kids prepared and keeping them organized. We are working good right now as a group. We have to keep preparing for the finals,” he said.

The finals will be held on Friday at Hilmer Lodge Stadium at Mt. SAC. The field events will start at 2 p.m. and the track events will start at 4 p.m.
