Freshman Tracee Van Der Wyk won first place in the Women’s 800 meter run where the PCC Track and Field team participated at the South Coast Conference meet at Long Beach City College on Friday. Both the men and women’s teams placed fifth place overall. This was the Lancer’s third meet of the season.

Cerritos College and Mt. San Antonio College won most of the races. Other schools that competed included El Camino, LA Southwest and hosting school LBCC.

In the 800 meter run, Van Der Wyk finished with a time 2:21.37.

In the Men’s 1500 meter run, McKinley Murphey placed third with a time 04:29.57.

“I was impressed when Tracee won the 800 meter run,” said Head Coach Armand Crespo, who was proud of Van Der Wyk’s finish. “She beat her personal record and it was her fastest time she ever done.”

“It was the best race I did for the season so far,” Murphy said of his finish.

“I thought I found that mental spot where I can say ‘forget it’ and run faster.”

Murphey expects the team to do better this season.

Rebecca Nunez finished eighth at the women’s 1500 with the time of 5:11.48. This was her first race of the season, and she thought she could’ve done better.

“I went fast in the beginning and then I died on the last lap,” she said.

Nunez wants to improve for her next races by running faster and improving her personal record.

Coach Crespo was satisfied of his team’s overall finish.

“I thought we did well, considering how we were getting a slow start,” he said.

“We still have a lot of work to do, but we still have a chance to be in the top three of the conference.”

Crespo is excepting the team to improve throughout this season and hopes the team can complete well against rival teams.

Next, Lancers will try to improve themselves on their upcoming meet taking place at Fullerton on Friday.
