With the World Cup approaching, soccer fans at PCC are getting ready for the event that they believe brings the world together.”My team this year and every four years will be Argentina,” said student Christian Pompa, Character Animation & VFX major.

“Almost all of my family was born in Argentina. They grew up around the area the Argentinean national team practices, and it is because of that I was brought up to be a major fan. It was passed down to me and I couldn’t be more of a supporter and fan myself,” said Pompa.

Randy Ruvalcaba, broadcast journalism major, calls it a celebration.

“Everybody in my family watches in excitement,” he said. “My uncles go as far as collecting memorabilia like Coke bottles and soccer balls; almost everything and anything that is World Cup related.”

The world wide sport of soccer invites some of the top ranking countries in the sport to perform at the World Cup.

“It is like how most Americans see the Super Bowl, for my family,” said Elizabeth Hernandez, Criminal Justice major.

The event takes place every four years and will be held in South Africa this time around. Soccer fans will be ready when Mexico kicks off the first game of the tournament against South Africa on June 11.

“I will be preparing to come up with an excuse to call out of work,” said Hernandez.

Others will patiently wait for their teams to put glory on the line.

“I get really into soccer games, especially if my team is playing. Of course I’ll be cheering and having a good time with my family. I usually just yell at the TV most of the time,” said Pompa.

“Come July 6, I’ll be watching the game at my house. Being that Argentina’s first few games are at 7:30 a.m. and some of my family will probably be sleeping, they will have to deal with it,” said Pompa.

“I find it extra exciting to watch around World Cup time because everyone is so into it,” said Ileana Garcia, Liberal Studies and Sociology major.

“I make the connection between soccer and the Hispanic race. It is pretty much the only sport that is world wide,” Garcia said. “Everyone’s cultures and race have something in common at this point, and that is, that they are all playing for greatness. It is the only time, aside from Olympics, I get to see Mexico represented in a great way.
