The President’s Latino Advisory Committee is offering several $1,000 scholarships to students, through the Latino Scholarships Fund.PLAC started in 2005 and consists of committee members from the community and PCC faculty and staff, as well as local businesses and friends of the college.

“Last year we gave out 10 scholarships. We plan to give out 4 to 10 this year,” said Cynthia Olivo, a committee member and associate dean of Counseling and Student Success.

“The numbers of scholarships given out are based on donations,” said Juan Gutierrez, director of public relations.

According the PLAC website, the scholarships are open to students who have completed at least 12 units by the time of application, are currently enrolled in nine units, and plan to continue studying at PCC or transfer to a four-year university.

“The scholarship is open to all ethnicities, not just to Latinos,” said Olivo.

Applicants must also demonstrate financial need, involvement in extracurricular or community activities and explain how their interactions within the Latino community have aided them in understanding Latino culture and the importance of attaining their career goals to help the Latino community. The GPA requirement will be based upon the pool of applicants.

“A student could be involved in a church or community activities, tutoring programs, athletic groups, and volunteer work. Anything on campus a student is involved in can be listed on the application,” said Olivo.

“Our goal is to help support students, so they can complete their ultimate goal,” she said “I hope we get hundreds of applications – that would be amazing.”

Applicants can print the scholarship application from the PLAC website. Applications must submitted to the Office of Scholarship and Financial Aid, in L114, by April 1.

Winners will be notified by April 18 and awarded May 11.
