The Board of Trustees recently approved a new student activity fee to take effect beginning in the fall semester. The new fee will be $10 during the fall and spring semesters and $5 during summer and winter intersessions.

PCC is going in the right direction with this new fee. Along with new Associated Students officers being elected, this is a good sign for changes to come in the upcoming 2010-2011 school year.

This student activity fee will help many campus programs including Puente Project and Ujima, trips, tutoring labs, public events, guest appearances, concerts, and campus clubs.

Additional fees are usually seen as a bad thing, but this particular one will focus on campus activities. It will help PCC more than it will hurt it.

Campus clubs that are currently underfunded will receive a much-needed financial boost. As of now PCC has a separate $1 representation fee which solely funds the AS Lobby Committee, but with this new activity fee, more clubs and campus committees, including the cultural diversity and sustainability committees will have funds.

Different tutoring labs at PCC will benefit, as many of them were forced to cut hours due to the budget cuts. The revenue garnered from this fee will hopefully increase the hours the labs can stay open.

This fee will give more opportunities for PCC students to participate in different programs offered.

$10 may seem a lot, but it is lower than ones levied at other comparable community colleges. At Santa Monica College, which is closest to PCC in size and prestige, the student activity fee is $19.

There are many possibilities this new revenue might engender. There can be more concerts and performances and more events with guest speakers.

Hopefully, it will also help fund the Child Development Center and the Community Education Center.

With this, maybe students will participate in more events because there will be more campus activities.

Students who don’t want to pay the fee have a right to opt out. There will be a form to apply for a refund, which will be available in the Office of Student Affairs.

The $10 fee is worth it. For essentially the price of one movie ticket, it will give PCC more opportunities and it will help the students in the long run.
