A man was arrested and released on bail after PCC police found several weapons, including a crossbow, and also marijuana in his car on Monday morning.Douglas Brandon Fairman, whom police say is a non-student, was seen by a cadet in a green Ford Explorer in Parking Lot 3 around 9 a.m. The cadet reported smelling marijuana [coming from the car]. After Fairman left the car, the cadet looked inside and saw at least two weapons, according to the police report.

“He’s being charged with unlawful possession of weapons on campus,” said Lt. Brad Young. An officer got to the parking lot shortly after 9 a.m.

“I could smell a faint odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle,” Officer James Karch said in the police report. “I was also able to see the handle of a fixed bladed knife.”

Young was called to the car after Karch saw three weapons through the windows. Police said they found an unlocked door and went through the rest of the car.

Inside was a handheld crossbow, a homemade club over 21 inches in length made from bullet casings welded together, two knives over four inches long, a synthetic knife unable to be detected by metal detectors, and four shurikens, which are metal playing cards with sharpened points on the edges.

The Explorer was registered to Fairman.

“[Fairman] claimed to be a student but we couldn’t find any records on him,” Young said.

On the center console of the car, police also found a glass pipe and what appeared to be a small amount of marijuana.

“The look, texture, and smell of the green leafy substance was consistent with marijuana,” Karch said. Chemical tests later confirmed it.

Possession of less than an ounce of marijuana is a misdemeanor. Fairman said it was for his own personal use and did not say anything further on the matter to the police.

According to Fairman, the crossbow, shurikens and the homemade club were things he had acquired over time, while the knives were used for camping. He told police that he bought the synthetic knife online.

Possession of a fixed bladed knife over 2.5 inches is a felony.

“Well, it’ll kill you,” said Young about the synthetic knife. “It’s a hard plastic.”

Fairman is due in court no later than July 23. He faces one felony weapons charge for the shurikens, and three misdemeanor charges, including one for the marijuana. He could not be reached for comment.
