With homecoming week underway, students have been responding positively to the activities in The Quad.In addition to the Homecoming Lancer Games, which took place near the Mirror Pools on Monday, a rock climbing wall was added to the list of activities. Just adjacent to the rock climbing wall was a jousting arena which drew primal screams from the crowd of students who gathered Wednesday to see their peers duke it out, gladiator style.

“People have been more active lately and I think it’s because in comparison to last year, we actually have a place to host the activities,” said Associated Students’ Vice President of Campus Activities Joseph Garcia, who is in charge of presenting homecoming events. “Compared to last year, we’re getting more votes for homecoming court,” he added.

Student trustee Nolan Pack and Feminist Club member Angela Lou made their appearance as part of the homecoming court. Students were surprised to hear of a gender bender candidacy for king and queen.

“I am a princess running for queen and she is a prince running for king,” Pack said. “We are challenging the traditional gender roles.”

Motivated by the recent upsurge in teen suicides due to hatred, ignorance, and misunderstanding, Lou and Pack ran for titles opposite to those traditionally set for their genders.

“We are doing this in a fun and light-hearted way,” Pack said. “But it is about a very serious issue.”

“We don’t want people to see it as a joke though,” Lou added.

Their efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. According to Garcia, students have been inspired to vote.

“People have actually been voting because of what they stand for in terms of social justice,” Garcia said.
