Five new vice president positions were filled with a unanimous vote by the Board of Trustees on July 20.

These five include Vice President of Human Resources Benedict Lastimado, Vice President of Information Technology Dwayne Cable, Vice President of Student and Learning Services Robert Bell, Vice President of Administration Services Richard van Pelt and Vice President of Educational Services Robert Miller.

The five were selected after an intensive search that spanned four months and drew applications from all over the country. The successful ones include two from PCC who had held interim positions, as well as three individuals new to the PCC community, said Public Relations Director Juan Gutierrez.

New to PCC are vice presidents Lastimado, Cable and Bell.

Lastimado, the new vice president of human resources, arrives with a background in human services. Most recently, he served as the vice chancellor of human resources and labor relations for at UC Merced and with the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District before that, said PCC President Mark Rocha at the meeting.

Lastimado’s additional human resource experience includes 20 years as a United States Army Human Resources Officer, according to Gutierrez. Lastimado’s formal education was completed across the nation, where he earned degrees from Seattle University, Boston University and the University of Maryland.

New Vice President of Information Technology Dwayne Cable has a background at community colleges, according to Gutierrez. A graduate of Wayne Community College, Cable held information technology positions at three additional community colleges and two universities. Cable hails most recently from Joliet Junior College in Illinois, where he was the vice president of information technology, said Rocha.

Vice President of Student and Learning Services Robert Bell’s background includes a range of student and learning services experience. He joins PCC after serving at Antelope Valley College as director of extended learning.

Rocha said Bell’s longest stint was a vice president of student learning services at nearby Chaffey College. Bell earned his bachelor’s and master degrees at two universities in California.

Formerly the interim vice president of administration services for two years, van Pelt has moved to the permanent vice president position. Van Pelt’s experience at PCC dates back to 1997, Rocha said. Van Pelt also served as director of facilities and engineering services.

Another familiar face is Robert Miller, former interim dean and now vice president of educational services. Rocha said Miller “has served the college for many years in several capacities.”

Miller has been with PCC for over 14 years and earned his Associates’ Degree at the college, said Gutierrez.

Miller said he is presently in the dissertation stage of earning a doctorate in Public Administration at the University of La Verne.
