Students, faculty and staff at PCC are trying to accommodate those members of the community affected by local fires. Some instructors have delayed dropping students who missed the first day of class due to the fires.

Students may be torn between ‘I need to go to class or I will be dropped’ and ‘I need to go home and save my house, said Stuart Wilcox, assistant director of admissions and records.

“It’s a reasonable and relatively minor accommodation.”

Prior to the first day of classes, the college website posted a message to students affected by the fires.

“Faculty and staff have been asked to be sensitive to the challenges you are facing and work to maintain your enrollment classes until this crisis subsides,” the message said.

A bulletin addressed to the faculty and staff states that some absences might be unavoidable.

“Accommodating those who are dealing with fire related extenuating circumstances will be a priority,” the bulletin said.

The Station fire, which has been burning since Wednesday, has caused mandatory and voluntary evacuations of neighborhoods in La Canada Flintridge, Altadena, La Crescenta and Pasadena.
