Though it has not yet been scientifically proven, interest in reflexology, an alternative form of healing, continues to grow as new developments are made. Today, it has grown to a point where certain shoe brands, like Okabashi, are being recognized solely for developing shoes based on the concept of reflexology.Although it was first practiced in Egypt, India and China, reflexology was first introduced to the west in 1913 and was referred to as “zone therapy.”

Today, it is known as a form of alternative healing that many people seek. “If it saves me from going to the doctor and taking pills, it’s fine with me,” said PCC student Melissa Moran.

According to reflexology.org, “reflexology is a complementary therapy, which works on the feet to help heal the whole person not just the prevailing symptoms.”

With this in mind, brands like Okabashi are producing products that will enable people to relax their feet,
allowing the rest of the body to naturally function in balance.

Not only is Okabashi based on reflexology, but this particular brand also follows the green theme that has flourished throughout society. They are made with 15 percent of recycled material and they are vegan friendly.

Even though this form of therapy is gaining recognition, it is still not accepted by everyone.

“I don’t know that its scientifically proven, therefore I would look at it with skepticism,” said Cara Burres-Jones, associate professor of natural sciences.

Even with the doubt experienced by some, various students on campus feel that they would be willing to try the products that deal with reflexology if the price was right.

PCC student Raymond Maltez said that he would consider trying the shoes if he had problems and

Adrianne David, another student, said, “If its not too expensive, I would buy it.”

According to reflexology.org, “with ever increasing levels of stress, it is important people take more responsibility for their own health care needs. Reflexology helps us to cop on a physical, mental and emotional level thereby encouraging us to heal and maintain health in all areas of our lives.
