Troubled ex-football player Darryl Stephens was found to have died due to a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head in an autopsy on Friday, according to San Bernardino Coroner Department Spokeswoman Sandy Fatland.Stephens died on May 19 after he was found shot in an apartment in Upland on May 18.

Stephens, a 24-year-old Pasadena native who attended Muir High School, was one of two suspects wanted by the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department in the slaying of Darron Henderson on May 5 in San Bernardino.

Stephens was arrested by PCC Police on Sept. 2, the first day of the fall semester, after a fight with his girlfriend.

Stephens was then jailed until his release from the California Rehabilitation Center in Norco on April 4. After his release, he was listed as “transient” on the Meagan’s Law website.
