Assistant men’s and women’s soccer team Coach Warren Altounian, 62, died on Friday from cancer. Altounian worked on campus for 12 years, guiding the Lancers’ men’s team to the 2002 State Final Four and was part of three South Coast Conference championship squads in concert with Head Coach Cerif Zein, according to the PCC website.

“He had a great personality and heart. He always wanted the best for us and taught us a lot of discipline,” said Derek Olson, who played on the soccer team. “If you didn’t know him, you were missing out on a great person.”

Olson’s sentiment was shared by teammate Brandon Flores, who even considered Altounian a father figure.

“He was strict and taught us discipline but he didn’t do anything to disrespect or harm us,” said Flores. “He was a reliable coach and was just a friendly person overall.”

“Warren was such a hard worker, you always saw him out there with the athletes,” said Health Education Instructor, Grace Apiati. “It’s such a great loss. We’re praying for his family in the Athletics Division.”

“He was a great coach,” said Athletic Division Clerk Christina Marcale. “He would always be out on the field for hours and you can tell he was very passionate about his job. He was such a healthy guy that always worked out and was upbeat. It’s really sad that he is gone.”

The family will hold a memorial service on Saturday at Holy Family Church in South Pasadena at 9 a.m. A memorial lunch will follow from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at St. Gregory Armenian Church.
