Need a costume for Halloween, or a new wardrobe for school? Usually, a person can find what they need for killer prices at their local charity thrift stores.
For those who are inexperienced thrift store shoppers, hopefully this guide will help reveal the hidden treasure that can be found in these stores.First, figure out which store best suits your needs. For something basic and simple, a piece from Goodwill, which gives its proceeds to help disabled people, or Salvation Army, which helps support the homeless, will best suit your needs.

If a trendier look is desired, go to Out of the Closet. Out of the Closet stores benefit AIDS/HIV research and are in trendier locations.

By the way, do not assume a vintage clothing store means thrift. Vintage clothing stores will sell used clothes at collector’s prices. One such small chain is Aaardvark’s, which is a few blocks down from PCC.

Once you arrive, right before entering the store, two key concepts should be kept in mind. The first is that its going to be a challenge sometimes to find good clothes because, unlike a department store, thrift store merchandise is not picked up and sorted as frequently.

Paulina Jones, 15, and Yara Roa, 18, have been frequent thrift store shoppers for the past three years. They suggest first timers “look a lot.”

To save time, a general idea of what type of clothing is wanted should be formed ahead of your shopping trip.

After looking around the store, its time to try on the bounty of garments and items that have been collected.

While trying on clothes, it may be helpful to mentally mix and match items that you may already have at home with the items found at the store.

Thrift stores are more than just great places for rare and strange clothes. They are also great places to find used and rare music and video collections.

Hector Romero, an employee at the Out of the Closet on Colorado Boulevard, a block from campus, said he frequently sees PCC students looking through the music and videos.

Once all the rare gems are found, the time to pay for everything arrives. This is where it gets thrilling and where the real treasure of the whole experience is found.

At most major clothing stores, what you see on the price tag is final. No more discounts are to come.

At a thrift store like Out of the Closet, however, certain colored tags mean value and savings. What possibly could have been $10 or $60 at a major clothing store may only be $1 at the thrift store.

Next time the need for new clothes or music comes around, instead of long waits in a crowded parking lot or dealing with the crowded department stores, try to think thrift.
