The Lancers women’s basketball team lost to Long Beach City College at home in blowout fashion, 78-43, on Wednesday night.

The Lancers were looking to bounce back from a stunning last-second tip-in loss on Friday night.

Head coach Joe Peron said that his team didn’t have “the effort” this game and was the same issue that continued on from Friday night’s game.

“[On Friday], it was a tenacity and effort that we are lacking right now,” Peron said.

The Lancers were ahead by double digits late in the first half but blew it to go down 35-25 at the half.

The Lancers did a good job against the Vikings in their 3rd place victory in the Honda of Pasadena Classic back in November. The name of the game on Wednesday was sloppy play leading to turnovers and a lack of will to grab the defensive rebounds.

The game got out of hand with eight minutes left when the Vikings went up by 22 and didn’t take their foot off the pedal.

Sophomore guard Emily Thach said Wednesday’s game was more mental than physical.

“I’ve noticed that whenever they scored, we put our heads down,” Thach said, “and that just made things worse. If we would have kept our heads up, we would’ve stayed in the game.”

Freshman guard Judith Espinoza said it was the defense and a lack of communication.

“We knew who all of their shooters were and they were knocking down all of their threes,” Espinoza said. “We didn’t have that help-side [defense], and all of their threes were increasing the lead against us.”

The Lancers were ranked No. 17 in the state going into the game on Wednesday. The team faces a winless El Camino-Compton Center on Friday Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. in the Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
