Although the women’s basketball team eventually won by 18 points, numbers didn’t quite tell the entire story of the Feb. 20 game against the Los Angeles Trade Tech Beavers on Sophomore Night for the Lancers. The final score was 58-40.

PCC was playing against a skeleton crew. Trade Tech was playing with only five players out on the court, with no other players on its bench to sub in when the starters got tired. The Beavers were leading 22-13 in the first half with 4:38 on the clock.

“[Trade Tech] came out ready to play,” said Head Coach Joe Peron. “We got lackadaisical and did a horrible job on our end coming out.”

Peron said that although Desiree Loving only had four points and two assists, it was the defensive plays from her that kept things close in the game until the Lancers got out of the funk they were in.

“You just have to keep on playing,” said Loving. “I’m sure we will do better in the next game though… with our regular starting lineup out on the court.”

All the sophomores started for PCC since, unless the Lancers get home court advantage in the playoffs, the game would be their last home game. Peron said that the change to the lineup “probably” contributed to the team’s offensive slump in the first half.

“I don’t know what to say,” said Sophomore Sabrina Martinez. “I guess that the change to the lineup really effected us… It was weird and awkward.”

It was only when Stella Ghazarian hit back-to-back three-pointers that the Lancers were able to snap out of the stupor they were in, and go on an 11-0 rally to end the half with a leading score of 24-22.

PCC had the lead, but for the first five to six minutes of the second half, the Lancers still couldn’t get it going offensively. “[Ghazarian] wasn’t focused in the second half,” said Peron. “ For that matter, I don’t believe the team was focused. It wasn’t a clean game.”

In the end, the five players for Trade Tech were too tired and the Lancers were able to overpower them to a win. “It wasn’t an easy win,” said Loving. “ But a win is a win nonetheless.

Peron said that he would “definitely” play his regular lineup at the next game.

The Lancers will be playing in the second round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs on March 2, after having finished the season with a 22-6 record.

PCC will be playing against the no. 11 seed Irvine Valley College Lasers who finished with a 20-10 record.

The Lancers last faced the Lasers last semester at the beginning of the season, but barely eked by for the 47-46 win.

“They are a really tough team,” said Peron. “But then every team we play in the playoffs will be tough.”

PCC has a perfect 18-0 record when they play at home, during the playoffs.
