The women’s cross country team placed third and the men’s team took last place in the South Coast Conference Championships at Cerritos Regional Park on Saturday.

“This is the toughest conference in the state and [the women] took third in it,” said Head Coach Armand Crespo.

This is the best racing the women’s team has exhibited in a conference since the late 1990’s, which demonstrates how talented the women’s team is this year, Coach Crespo said.

“I did well for myself,” said Andrea Mejia, art and communications. “My biggest problem is when people pass me because it’s discouraging,” she said.

Other runners were competing despite not being 100 percent healthy.

“I did OK for being injured,” said Melissa Hadloc, broadcast journalism. “I’m going to work on getting healthy and healing my injury,” she said.

The men’s team finished last in the conference as a result of key runners not performing at their most effective level, according to Crespo.

“I did my best,” said Hamilton Ran, psychology. “Groups [of runners] merged together and I couldn’t get through,” he said.

Coach Crespo said his team will be training hard for next year’s season.

“Everything is going to be pretty intense, but short,” he said, and added. Crespo is not the only one thinking about next season already as members of the team have begun to as well.

“I’m going to double my workout every day this summer,” said Taylor Toyotome, law enforcement.

“I’m going to focus on worrying about myself, and not others,” said Mejia.

The cross country team will  head to Ontario tomorrow to solidify a place at the state championships.
