The Lancers lost their seventh straight game on Saturday night, squandering opportunities to keep the game close and giving up many big plays to keep Moorpark’s offense on the field.

The Pasadena City College football team continued their losing streak Saturday as they fell to the host Moorpark College Raiders (4-3) by a score of 31-15 at Griffin Stadium in Moorpark.

The start of the contest looked promising for the Lancers on both sides of the ball, as PCC defensive back Dashon Wade forced a fumble on the second play of the game, which was recovered by PCC linebacker Kevin Tapia and returned to the Pasadena 27-yard line.

After the Moorpark turnover, the Lancers capped off a 12-play, 73-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run from Lancers quarterback Darrian Cazarin. PCC took an early 7-0 lead.

On Moorpark’s next drive on offense, they ran seven plays to drive 62 yards to the Pasadena one-yard line. Pasadena’s defense held their own as Moorpark could not get the ball in the endzone while opting to not kick a field goal, forcing a turnover on downs.

“We had two huge series on defense to start the game,” said PCC defensive coordinator Carl Lopez. “It just turned out that the big play throughout the night is what really killed us.”

The momentum was stopped there, as PCC was ineffective for most of the game on defense. Moorpark quarterback Nick Davis was a nuisance for PCC’s defense, accounting for 264 passing yards and 75 rushing yards. He also passed for two touchdowns and rushed for two touchdowns. Davis was clutch when it mattered most, converting nine of 15 third down opportunities. He was not sacked the entire game.

“He (Nick Davis) ran around well enough to keep plays alive,” said PCC head coach Fred Fimbres. “They made really big plays in the passing game when they needed to.”

The backbreaker for Pasadena occurred in the third quarter with the Lancers trailing 24-7. As the Lancers drove 10 plays for 63 yards to the Moorpark one-yard line, Marciss Grigsby fumbled on the goal line and Moorpark recovered the ball.

Three plays later, on a third down play, Nick Davis connected with Moorpark receiver Justin Coburn for an 88-yard touchdown to give the Raiders a commanding 31-7 lead over the Lancers.

Dalyou Pierson, PCC’s star defensive lineman who entered the game with 9.5 sacks, was held without at least one sack in a game for the first time all season. However, Pierson was able to deflect one of Davis’ passes in the fourth quarter and fellow Lancer defensive lineman Gus Ferrat intercepted it. The interception was the first for the Lancers’ defense since they had two interceptions in the second game of the season against Orange Coast College.

“They converted a handful of their third downs,” said Lopez. “We didn’t even force them to punt until late in the third quarter.”

After the interception, Lancers backup quarterback Brandon Martinez threw a two-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Darion Lewis. PCC was successful on the two-point conversion when running back Kitlo Meme juked multiple Moorpark defenders, making the score 31-15 in favor of the Raiders.

Meme was a bright spot for the Lancers on offense, as he carried the ball 10 times for 68 yards. On defense, linebacker Roy Torres led the team with 12 total tackles.

Pasadena City College travels to play Allan Hancock College on Saturday, Oct. 26 at Righetti High School in Santa Maria.
