In a game fraught with personal injury, the women’s soccer team put up a good fight in the season opening game, hosting the LA Pierce College women’s soccer team at Robinson Stadium on Sept. 2. The Lancers lost 6-3, but the effort showed by the women was commendable.

The main feature of this game was not so much the score as the game play. Several players were injured, some only slightly, but when noses become bloodied and ankles are twisted it stands out.

In the second half, forward Vanessa Capra was hit by the ball and had her nose bloodied. Later in the second half, the injury that really shocked the crowd and the players alike was when defender Brianna Chopin, a player on the Pierce team, shattered her ankle.

According to witnesses, her foot was turned completely around backwards. After inspecting the injury, PCC Head Coach Randy Lilavois called 9-1-1 and an ambulance was called to the field. The on-campus police and emergency services also arrived with a wheel chair at the same moment as the ambulance. The ambulance transported Chopin to Huntington Hospital in Pasadena.

Coach Lilavois was proud of the team, saying that Pierce is “one of the best teams in the state, and for us to stay with them that long was very impressive. Obviously, the injuries hurt everybody in terms of the pace of the game, but I think we did really, really well.”

The game continued after the incident and finished up with no other major plays or injuries to speak of. The final result was LA Pierce College wining 6-3.

Lancer Captain Brittany Austin reflected on the loss after the game.

“I felt we did really good. I mean I don’t feel like we lost. It was close,” said Austin. “The goals that they scored were just mistakes. I don’t feel like they beat us. I think we’ll do really good in the season.”

“For our first game, it was amazing. It was amazing,” said Capra, who returned after her injury. “[It was] a different experience for me personally because I’m a freshman, but I actually enjoyed it. Our team is probably going to win all season with the way we looked today.”
