A record breaking pass play, one of five passing touchdowns, helped the Lancers football team to a victory against Glendale Community College on Saturday.

The record setting play was a 96-yard pass by quarterback Justin Posthuma to wide receiver Jose Rodriguez. PCC has won the last seven games against Glendale with the final score of Lancers 49 to Vaqueros 28.

According to PCC’s website, Posthuma was named the Southern California Football Association National Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week  after his performance. Posthuma completed 18 passes out of 22 attempts for 323 yards.

In the first quarter, PCC got out to an early lead with their first drive of 30 yards for a touchdown. Running back James Owens scored the Lancers’ first touchdown of the season with a one-yard run.

Later in the quarter, Owens had an 80-yard touchdown run for his second of the season. Wide receiver Ben Childs finished the quarter completing a pass for a 10-yard touchdown, finishing the first quarter in a PCC lead, 21-0.

PCC’s defense forced two fumbles, which they also recovered. Overall statistics for the game show that the Lancers committed 14 penalties for 125 yards.

“We need to work on our composure and discipline,” said Head Coach Fred Fimbres. “There were too many reckless penalties. There is a fine line between aggressiveness and reckless penalties.”

Posthuma made some great plays that showed he wasn’t going down easily. When the Glendale defenders were closing in, he found a way to stretch the play. The last play of the second quarter, for example, was set up by a fumble recovery by defensive lineman Khambrell Gomez.

Posthuma was rushed by a Glendale defender. He scrambled but found wide receiver Jameel Hasan and completed a 20-yard touchdown pass.

Wide receiver Ian Hamilton scored the final touchdown for the Lancers, receiving a 32-yard pass from Posthuma with 31 seconds left in the third quarter.

Saturday’s game was Fimbres‘ first win as head coach of the Lancers. “I am happy that the student-athletes got the win,” Fimbres said.  “Although they made mistakes, we can fix them. On a selfish note, it feels really good to get a win under my belt.”

The Lancers (1-0) are back in action on Saturday at Robinson Stadium against the Allan Hancock Community College Bulldogs (1-0) at 6 p.m.
