Tuesday marked the beginning of the fall season for Lancer baseball as the team had their best first fall game under head coach Evan O’Meara, who is in his fourth season as head coach.”We are no where near where we want to be, but I was really pleased with our outing,” said O’Meara.

The Lancers took on L.A. Valley College and Even Bloem went 3-for-3. while both Justin Meza and Jacob Giambolvo hit doubles.

“The fall [season] is strictly evaluation,” said O’Meara. “We are trying to find the best nine guys to put on the field.”

A total of 65 players turned out this fall and now the roster has been cut down to 43 players.

“We’ll cut down to a roster of about 28 [players] before January,” said O’Meara. “I’m looking for a mix of guys who can play together. row the boat in the same direction.”

O’Meara has high expectations out of his players as he expects them to perform both on and off the field.

“Just because a guy has talent, doesn’t mean he’s making the team,” O’Meara said.

O’Meara expects his players to be outstanding on and off the field as they are expected to go to class, study halls and set a great example as representatives of the school.

“If they don’t have the ability to stay poised, focused and determined, they won’t make the roster,” O’Meara says.

Both new and returning players have to try out for the team once again as each player is getting a fresh start going into the new season.

“Just because they made the team last year doesn’t mean they’ll make it this year,” O’Meara says. “That’s what these evaluations are for.”

Returning this fall are outfielder Tyler Craig and right fielder Roderick Martinez who finished the spring season with a batting average of .302 and .323 respectively.

Pitching prospects Greg Bond, Jeff Stirling and Justin Gracieux, who are currently injured, are looking to add some depth to the Lancer pitching.

The Lancers finished the spring season with a 7-36 record and placed seventh in the South Coast Conference for the third straight year.
