Newly hired Athletic Director Tony ‘”Bones” Barbone in the GM Building on Nov. 20, 2013 in Pasadena, Calif. Before being hired at PCC, Barbone held the same position at El Camino College.

Barbone is currently finishing his fall semester as El Camino College’s athletic director, where he has held the position since 2009.

“We are very excited and privileged to bring Tony Barbone and his vast athletic experience at the collegiate level into our PCC family,” Senior Vice President / Assistant Superintendent of Academic & Student Affairs Robert Bell said.

Bell will continue to serve as interim athletic director until Barbone’s Jan. 6 start date.

“What impresses me about Tony is he truly understands the intricate nature of community college athletics,” Bell said. “He is passionate about doing the important job of managing intercollegiate athletics programs. We are indeed fortunate to have a person of Tony’s high qualities become the new leader going forward in Lancer athletics.”

Barbone is currently the President of the South Coast Conference (SCC), the conference in which all Lancers’ sports participate, with the exception of football. He is also President of the Central Conference of the Southern California Football Association (SCFA) and serves on the Executive Board as the SCC representative to the CCC Athletic Directors Association.

“Barbone will bring a lot of positive change and order to our department,” women’s assistant basketball coach La’Nette Dillard said. “He has strong leadership skills and we’re really excited to have him here.”

“I’ve become very familiar with PCC since working at El Camino and I feel there are great possibilities in growth for the intercollegiate athletics program,” Barbone said. “I know my role is lending support and leadership to our coaches, staff, and more importantly our student-athletes. Knowing PCC’s rich history in athletics and being a part of future greatness here is something I look forward to in 2014 and beyond.”

Originally from Covina, Barbone earned an associate of arts degree at Mt. San Antonio College, then bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Azusa Pacific University. Barbone and his wife Beth are residents of Glendora.

“Barbone will have a great time here I’m sure,” said men’s basketball coach Michael Swanegan. “We all welcome him here and we have great coaches that will work with him and help him get acclimated to the school. He’s bringing years of experience as both an athletic director and coach and we’re all excited to have him here.”
